  1. Frozen chisel, that does'nt sound too healthy

Its not and we literally have to run on it almost every weekend we hunt here where we live. Not only is it hard on a dog its hard for them to get up on a coyote running on that shit cuz the coyotes seem to glide across it while the dogs struggle their asses off. This in turn makes the race even longer which fucks the dogs up even more. Nonetheless we have dogs that do it week after week.

Its too bad yall cant get dogs from us. Id love to help you out with this project. My kinda dogs for sure except Id use one of our coyote greyhounds and are coyote hounds.

I have seen those coyote greyhounds on here I think someone posted a video with an old boy on in who kept them. To be honest there is plenty of good British stock around - just a case of finding the right ones. ATB S2H
I guess some would say white tail deer but you aren't gonna find a handful of dogs that could take one regularly and that is illegal so not being bred for.
legality aside, what makes them so hard to catch that only a handful of dogs can get them regularly?
Speed and the ground they live on is wide open and rough as can be. Its just real tough to catch em is all. I'm not sayin all areas cuz I'm sure some boys have some luck but here where I live Ive never seen a dog that could really do it. None even came close to be honest not once they really decided to run.
wonder if they are quicker than roe or red deer on rough ground,

I wouldn't have a clue of course. All I know is when they decide to run a fast track dog would struggle to stay with one and it wouldn't take long and it would be broke. Prolly one run on frozen chisel would do them in.

I hope ya keep this thread goin. I'm interested to see what ya find. Ive had my buddy's male dog that I bred at my place the last week just havin some fun with him. He is a stud to say the least. I don't know if I have a good picture of him these days or not but I will try and find a pic of him when he was a youngster. He stands bout 31 inch tall and weighs bout 100 plus. Monster but he can kinda run for a big dog.

sounds like a beast of a dog, for me I'm not after something that big if I'm honest anything 24 tts and above will do, but my preference is maybe 26/27" for an all rounder. Were hoping the deerhound blood might throw a broken coat and add some of that classic deerhound laid-back nature, as well as a nice large chest. I think deerhounds would do very well on coyotes over there they have a decent nose too for a running dog and are brave dogs.

His littermate sister was my gyp and she stood 27 ats and weighed about 80 pounds. I don't think the pure deerhounds would be any good at all on them. You would need some greyhound in there or else ya aint gonna catch much.

Good luck. Hope ya find what you are looking for. I'm sure there are some good British stock but its just easier to find over here I would think considering we can pretty much hunt 10x more often than people in your country. We don't have any laws stopping us and some of us live in wide open spaces with a lot of game and coyotes are pretty much the ultimate quarry when it comes to a running dog of that type. I guess some would say white tail deer but you aren't gonna find a handful of dogs that could take one regularly and that is illegal so not being bred for.

Ture I was thinking about them two but just wondering how a lurcher would be next to one of them

They wont be next to them. They have uses but you wont be catching a fox here where I live with a dog that doesn't have a load of sighthound blood in it.

Hi Dan, how you keeping , you been doing much with your stags, you been getting many yotes ?

All good. Yes I still keep running hounds and greyhounds. We still catch our fair share of game for sure.

I run mine down the creeks close to the water and mostly at night when its cooler. But here where I live it can be 80 at night and 100% humidity so ya kinda gotta be careful. Coldest and hottest place on earth except maybe Iowa in my opinion. This state sux!

I'm looking to go to Romania next year hopefully, highs of 40c and lows of -20c, spring and autumn are pleasant temps . Do you have a limit on working temperatures you work the dogs in? If so what limits you, do the dogs have a certain amount of time on frozen ground? Is there a max temperature say25c?

I try to not run them when its much over 50F. As far as the cold goes it don't really matter. My dogs run on frozen plow all winter long.

  9. as there no hidein places on some of th4e big arable feilds dogs have to run to cacth in winter not many gimmies or fence bouncers etc

This is the exact reason why I have preached and preached to folks over yalls way to use the coursing dogs as your "greyhound" blood. Catching them hares out in the wide open should show you all you need to know about a dogs speed and whether or not he or she runs to catch. No need for any of yall to ever use greyhound, deerhound, sazuki or any of that ever again for hunting dogs. Its just not necessary and actually rather foolish in my opinion.

  10. By all accounts seagull herself wasn't anything special Fred holmes charlie arguably the best stud dog ever was an average dog best stud of recent times buddy average dog then u look at foxy arguably the best single handed hare coursing bitch to run a fen but never really left anything I wouldn't breed off any old average shite but this wooly bitches bloodlines would make it a sin not to be bred off this bitch was wasted with me as I had to much on at the time to give her 100 percent if a good keen lad would of had her he would of got more out of her but at very least she was a bitch that always killed a hare plenty of 2s and the odd 3 but most importantly she had the heart of a lion and was good round cover ad rather breed off something that I know would always give 100 percent effort everytime out.....Needless to say I'd rather be on here saying she was special she was a masterpiece but she wasn't but how many lads are running to stud dogs that have never been tested or ran a full winter just off hearsay

I have seen it way too many times to not know its true. My dad has preached to me for years to just keep breeding them good steady dogs to each other and sooner or later you will get another great one. Its all about time in this game and you need a lot of it cuz nothing comes free and nothing happens over night.

  11. Cheers lads she was decent bitch Mr powers nowt special just good honest bitch with a massive heart but not many bred aswell as she is she should produce something to scouser he throwing good pups and was a top class dog himself

This thread never gets old. The best dogs I have ever seen come out of good honest dogs. Years ago we tried breeding to the best of the best a few times. All we got was some good honest dogs and a couple of not so good. All the great dogs I ever seen just happen. Like the old saying goes. "Good dogs are where you find 'em."

  12. any lurcher that both parents do the job you ask simple as that

This is probably the best suggestion in my opinion but if I have to go down the "what cross road" I'm gonna say a coursing x lamping dog.

I have no idea what or why anybody would say deerhound or whippet or wheaten or bull. It just don't make sense to me.

Edit to say this and I hope nobody gets all offended or thinks that I am cocky or arrogant but I truly believe I could bring any dog on my yard over to where yall live and they would perform like the original poster asked and I literally have no clue whatsoever what is in my dogs.

  13. I may be breeding mother to son in the future. I'm just not sure yet. I have done it in the past. I got one extremely spooky gyp pup in that litter. I'm talkin off the charts spooky like a coyote at a very young age. The sad part was she was by far the best built and best lookin pup in that litter.
