I can understand that dog lads and the ferreting boys moan about the numbers being shot but at the end of the day how do you know it’s pest not control ?.

There’s pest control & there’s mass slaughter, end of the day nobody should be allowed to wipe a species out from a full area, for financial gain. That’s what it comes down to, wildlife being slaughtered to maximise profit from the land and it doesn’t sound so good when you say it like that.

I reckon it’s the “sport shooters” who do the most damage. End of the day it’s a job for a keeper, and for the most part the population of foxes is artificially inflated due to the release of birds. Simple fact of life is it’s their job to whack foxes and not a sport as such, so I can see why a rifle and a thermal is used. Same as why on shooting estates litters are dug etc. Hard comparing sport with pleasure. I been asked to go out tonight for a fox that dug into A partridge unit last night and killed a pile. That’s life.

The ones who are f***ing the job are the hobby shooters who’s whole life revolves around getting all of the kit and then getting the biggest bag they can to put on Facebook.

But, if it’s their ground and they got perm, what you gonna do?

Probably right, in certain areas of the country. Some keepers are killing mad as well mind you, mostly younger ones but you get the odd older one that’s trigger happy as well.

Cant do anything about it, just need to let them get on with it and have a good moan about it on here ?

I've heard keepers telling me that thermal let's you get the lamp shy ones, but is it the end of the world that odd foxes have been clever enough to have learned how to survive, they should be admired for being survivers, country side will be a poorer place with no foxes.

It won’t come to that, shooting will go before the foxes do, it’s only a matter of time for pheasant shoots & grouse moors I think, the pressures mounting on them. You’ll still get your rifle boys doing it as a hobby but with less keepers there’ll be a lot less foxes & other predators killed.

Treating foxes has sporting animals has been forgotten, that's why it's called hunting and not killing.what pleasure anyone can get out of shooting a fox or rabbit that can't see you is beyond me,shot and left on the field like a piece of rubbish, show's very little respect for the wildlife, foxes and rabbits need sensible control not being wiped out.

Same with the mountain hare, they’ve passed a bill in Scotland to protect them but not enforced it yet so they’re still getting slaughtered. It’s probably the one that annoys me the most to be honest because they’re an iconic native species, a proper survivor where they live & they’re being blasted in their thousands by trigger happy grouse keepers. They’re in decline nationwide & it’s the people preaching about conservation & wildlife management that are to blame.

Rifles absolutely destroy numbers ! Foxing wise they ruined a spot completely it’s no fit and healthy foxes getting away from a bullet , when a good fox beats a dog or hounds you can’t fault it !

Foxings just gone completely electronic, you’ve got men sat in a land rover, window down with a fox pro, NV, thermal and rifle. How’s that sporting in any way?

I do agree with you in many ways mate. It’s the world we live in now though. Most people only do the things they do to make a name for themselves.

There’s a spot we go on that’s absolutely bursting with certain quarry, we could bag up every time to get the big lined out picture for WhatsApp, but it’s short sighted, if you take a few each time and only go maybe half a dozen times a season then your good spots will stay good, but like you say for some the need to show off takes over.

100% you’re sure that if someone posted that they’d caught a couple hundred rabbits either ferreting or whatever on here - they’d only get negative comments and no one would be praising them ?

Disnt see many negative comments on the lads doing 100+ on the lamp etc.

Just making the point that there are plenty of numbers men on both Sides of the gun / dog divide.

They’d get loads of praise definitely but it’s short sighted. Nothing wrong with lads taking a good number 50-100 a few time’s a season but those rifle boys try to do it on every spot they go on.

True. But if that photo had three blokes, a few dogs, pile of ferrets and long nets etc etc, they would be THL hero’s. Would they not ?

Definitely not, still a c*nts trick no matter how you look at it taking that many of anything off 1 spot. Ferrets, dogs, nets etc takes a lot more effort than a .22 with a thermal as well.

Thermal makes sense if your running dogs on your own somewhere your not meant to be It could be a handy bit of kit to have seeing what gears actually there before flicking a lamp on burning fields down with rays of light also see if people are sniffing about But if you lamp with other people I couldn’t think of nothing more boring than being in the dark most of the night an only switching a lamp on when a runs been picked out for you an dog to run I think half the fun is the handler looking down the beam for a run for the dog

Couldn’t agree more. For me half the fun is looking for stuff & the excitement when you find it. Those thermals take skill out of it you don’t need to know anything about your quarry anymore just chuck a couple of grand at one of them & you’ll find everything that’s in an area.

Been sent this pic this morning end of the day they might be a handy bit of kit for lurcher lads but on the whole they want banning before they destroy the countryside

Hares are doing well round my way  unlike the rabbit ,Like you say it's a shame we can no longer test our dogs on a winter hare but the shooting Brigrade can line up and shoot large numbers .i have never liked the idea of hare shoots and they do nothing for the welfare of hare population unlike the coursing clubs ?

You need to be a proper c*nt to shoot a hare IMO.

They're doing well round by me as well, don’t run them local the fields are shit but it’s nice to see them.

its funny really, when you think about it with dogs, my big dog Buck same size as  ginger beard dog , but a different  stamina. When he was younger and fit, i could put long hard night in ,  dont get me wrong he blow a bit, but  had good recovery from each run , i always found when my bullxs  had few hard runs, they could never recover  like he could, suppose thats why lads put saluki in there pit x lines to get better wind. A gsd like a collie , both have very good natural stamina .

Saluki crosses have their faults like all dogs but they’re stamina is on a different level to any other type of lurcher I’ve seen, they can have a proper stinger & 5 minutes later look like they’ve not even had a run. I wouldn’t have a lurcher without saluki blood in now I think I’d miss the wind too much now I’m used to having it.

what the feck you on about?

Dog wants to have a few seasons graft under its belt before you breed from it. It could be a flat out jacker & you’d be passing its cowardly genes on to its offspring without knowing. Decent lads could end up with those pups and waste 18 months rearing them. If it’s not a tested dog it shouldn’t be bred from but that doesn’t stop most lurcher owners anyway so crack on you’ll do whatever you want to do regardless what people on here tell you.

Good man sounds like good stuff I don't think I'd need it just for the occasional walk round like

It benefits the type I keep mate the saluki blood can make it hard to keep a good back on them at any time of year to be honest. If I fed it to my spaniels they’d be fat as f**k within a week. It can’t be bad stuff like my male dog can be a bit fussy, wouldn’t touch any other biscuit but likes that stuff so I just stick with it

Expensive gear that wolfheart im 2 tight 4 that

It is aye if you buy 6 bags at a time it works out about £43 a bag, I’ve never bothered with those high end completes before but the 30% fat thing swayed it for me, anything that can keep the weight on mid winter is a handy thing and saves f***ing about with lard etc

  18. I’ve messed about with all sorts of different diets & I’ve settled on Millie’s Wolfheart peak performance with chicken mince. Best I’ve seen the dog’s looking to be fair they’re holding weight and the couple of outings I’ve had my young dogs ran well so can’t complain.

I feed my dogs breakfast in the winter as well I think unless you’ve got a dog with a slow metabolism when you’re working them hard you really can’t get enough in to them.

As far as BARF is concerned when I was feeding just meat I gave a mix of everything something different every night and dog did ok on it. Had to stop that though because he started to get fussy and would only eat certain things and leave others.
