Thinking about doing variation for .22 wildcat sniper

Honestly you won’t regret it mate, I had a slot to fill for .22 FAC air and was lucky enough to drop on a mint FAC Wildcat mk3 sniper in .22 cal from a bloke on the AGF at a bargain price and it’s the most accurate rifle I own?.

Lightweight and powerful, it comes as standard with the superior liner and is equally accurate shooting 18.13 pellets at 930 fps and 23 grain slugs at around 960fps.

How do you find the trigger on the 700?

It’s HEAVY, I know that the stock trigger can be lightened having seen a couple of YouTube videos but it’s probably something beyond my capabilities!.

Up to date I’ve just been testing different brands/weights of ammo and although  it’s a heavy trigger the gun is shooting around 1 moa which I’m happy to use out in the field , I might at some point take it to a gunsmith to either lighten it or go for an upgrade.

My gun is the VSSF MK1 model which I believe they stopped producing in the late 90s/early2000s so I’m not entirely sure which trigger it has ???.

I have just taken the action out of the stock and the trigger unit still looks to have the original glue covering the screws which besides needing a good clean looks like it’s never been touched.

    Some photos below.

You christened them both? I've a 457 synth too but in hmr, cracking tool for the ££

I bought the .223 around three weeks ago along with Four lots of different ammo from 40gr to 55gr ( 1 in 12 twist rate) so just ammo testing before shooting live quarry.

The CZ was christened on a few rabbits earlier this week and it’s spot on.

How do you find the 17 HMR for accuracy?.

Very nice having your license landed and not to much of a wait either .
just hope you have deep pockets now to go and buy that lot plus scopes , night vision/ thermal , dive bottles, cases, ammo and the list goes on and on ?

    Thanks lads

    Apologies for the late replies.

I have filled two slots so far , first was a pre-owned Remington 700 VSSF .223 with T8 over barrel mod and then a new CZ457 synthetic.22 LR + Atech wave mod and really pleased with them both ?.  I shall get some photos done later.

VM fortunately I only have to fork out for the rifles, mods and ammo as I already have everything else.
I would imagine the .22 air would be the most expensive slot to fill as I was looking at something from the FX range, however I already have a sub 12 FX Dreampup  in .22 calibre which I’m seriously considering getting fettled and putting on my ticket so that’ll save a good chunk !.

I may live to regret this but i hope not. If it helps you, you are welcome to come over here (south of Preston) and i will take you to one of my places. I will run through the safety aspects and set up some hardox fox targets for you to practise on. I will make available for you .22 lr, .17hmr, .204, .243 and 30/06. If you listen and prove to be safe you would be welcome back, if you aren't you will be going back to yorkshire quicker than you came followed by a letter to the West Yorks firearms dept telling them you aren't fit. So the offer is there if you want it, oh, and don't turn up in Burberry gear!

@ianmThanks very much indeed, that really is a generous offer and greatly appreciated.

I also posted on another forum yesterday and have spoken with an FAC holder who lives literally a stones throw from my permission so hopefully I may be sorted, however, if for any reason this doesn’t happen and your offer still stands then I would be very grateful.

Once again, thanks very much for your kind and generous offer.

  6. Morning all

Well it looks like my application is going in the right direction ?.  I have just received a call from the FEO who wants to arrange a home visit, BUT the only sticking point is that he has stipulated that I would need a mentor to accompany me for a couple of outings before he visits as I don’t have any previous experience of firearms in the field ( only sub 12 fpe air rifles) and quite rightly wants to make sure that I can be trusted and handle firearms safely and responsibly.

The FEO has asked that my mentor have experience of .17HMR and .223.

I would be very grateful if there is someone who would be willing to help out and accompany me for a couple of trips on my permission which is in Bradford,West Yorkshire, however i am quite willing to travel to you if necessary, I will add that I’m more than happy to pay any expenses and would throw in a few beer tokens too ?.

Please feel free to message me if you prefer.

Many thanks in advance, thanks also to all the people who have given their advice and suggestions.

  7. Morning all  Firstly many thanks for all your help and advice, it really is appreciated ?.

I thought I would give an update so below is a list of what I am applying for based on  your comments and the reasons (justification) for my choice.

.22 FAC air + moderator- vermin control and target/range/club shooting.

.25 FAC air + moderator- vermin control and target/range club shooting.

    .17 HMR + moderator-vermin control  and target/range club shooting

    .223 C/F + moderator- fox control and target/range/club shooting

I was going to initially apply for either a .22 WMR or .22 Hornet because the landowner wants the fox numbers thinning down however I have listed the .223 c/f as I know this is the more accepted foxing round with most police forces but if it’s declined by the FEO then hopefully I can negotiate and hopefully be granted either the Hornet or the WMR which I would be more than happy with .

Again any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.

  8. Just a quick update lads, I contacted West Yorkshire Police and apparently the land has never had a search done, I’m told that they will visit and check the land once my application is in.

Villaman, judging by your results I’m wondering whether I actually need a .22 lr! Did you get all four guns on your initial grant with no questions asked?.

A .25 impact running at 70+ ft lb definitely sounds good ?.

  9. 12 hours ago, Alsone said:

Also, bear in mind the cost. The list above comes to £6k+ by my estimation.

    Hi Alsone

Yep it is a fair old wedge but fortunately I have already got the gun cabinet in place and have more than enough good quality scopes , NV and all the other bits and pieces so thankfully it’s just the guns and ammunition.

    If I’m a bit short I can always sell a kidney ?.

  10. Morning chaps

Firstly many thanks to everyone  for all the info and advice so far, it really is helpful and very much appreciated ?.

As I mentioned in my opening post the land I currently have permission on is approximately 75 acres in total but apparently the land owners also have another family property which as yet I haven’t seen so I don’t know a great deal about apart from the fact  it’s around 50 acres or so which they are also quite happy for me to shoot over ? so i can consider myself very fortunate as I know just how difficult it is to gain permissions.

At the moment I think the best thing to do would be as BenBoy advised and contact West Yorkshire Police to find out exactly what calibers the land has been cleared for which will have an affect on what  I can/cannot apply for.

As far as I’m aware my club is passed for all calibers although during my probation period i only shot up to .243 c/f,  and again as  advised I shall put all guns down for both vermin control and target .

All  your comments and suggestions are definitely making me have a rethink (as I knew they would ?) but it’s probably a good idea to put down my reasoning for my initial choice.

.22 air rifle,    I listed this because there are stables and cowsheds so was considering something from the FX range which the power could be turned down for the rats and pigeons in the buildings then turned up to 30-35ft lb for out in the fields.

.22 LR    for use as a daytime set up with a standard scope and to give a bit more range than the fac air rifle.

.22 LR    As above but for use as a dedicated NV set up without having to swap over scopes.

.17 HMR  For that bit more distance over the .22 LR and with the intention (if allowed) as a close range foxing round.

I think the above gives good reason and justification to satisfy the FEO although having re-read through everyone’s  comments and recommendations I  think I can safely say that the above list is probably going to change .

     Thanks again everyone

What calibres is it already cleared for?

How long have you been a member of your club?

They will likely wish to speak to the landowner of your permission anyway but map is good idea. You say you've been shooting there for a bit so be sure to make them aware you're confident of areas that are safe to shoot toward & ones that aren't.

I know there will be some saying if you've got the need for CF then no reason not to get on grant. But I only applied for hmr on my grant for same reason. I did get CF soon after but my job helped there.

In all honesty mate you're best off giving your department a call. Don't ask "would it be OK please if I had a big boy calibre!" If you think you need a CF to control the foxes as the landowner has asked, then tell them that's why you need one.

    Good luck ?

    Ps

    It doesn't have to be .223! ?

    Hi Ben

Thanks for your reply and the advice, much appreciated , I shall email WYP and ask what calibre's it’s been cleared for ?. I’ve been shooting the land for around six months so I’m aware of surrounding roads, footpaths etc.

I’ve been a member of my club for around 3 years or so.

I’m in no mad rush to get the application in and would rather get as much info as possible before I submit my application, hence my post.

     Thanks again mate

  12. Morning everyone, hope you’re all keeping well.

I would be very grateful for some help and advice from you more experienced fellow forum members regarding a few questions I have on the FAC application process and the calibres to most likely be granted.

I am currently a full  member  of a shooting club in Huddersfield (YORKSHIRE SHOOTING CENTRE) and have also just recently been fortunate enough  to gain my first shooting permission which is approximately 75 acres on which I currently use my sub 12 ft lb air rifles for pest control which is mainly rabbits with the odd pigeon and corvid, however the land has more than its fair share of foxes and the owner is more than happy for me to shoot which obviously needs FAC centre/rim fire plus the fact that many of the rabbits are well out of sub 12 air rifle range.

After doing some research it seems that many police forces operate  differently and will stipulate on which calibre is allowed or not allowed for fox control so I would really appreciate any help or advice from fellow forum members especially from FAC holders covered by West Yorkshire Police, I know that many people will use either .22 or .17 rimfire within sensible range which I would be quite happy with as I doubt I would be granted a .223 c/f on my first application , plus they may insist on a mentor and also the fact the land may not get passed for a centrefire calibre .

At the moment I  have it in my head to apply for the following , however it’s not set in stone and. will happily take advice on other suggestions ?

.22 Air rifle + moderator    (Vermin control)

.22 LR  + moderator           (Vermin control/ target shooting)

.22 LR  + moderator            (Vermin control with  NV)

.17 HMR + moderator          (Vermin control)

    Does that seem reasonable???.

Would it also be a  good idea to enclose a copy of my signed permission form and an outlined map of the permission along with the application?.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated and thanks for taking the time to read.

  13. FREE FERRETS plus gear for sale

    View Advert

    FERRETS STILL AVAILABLE

    Alright lads

Unfortunately due to ongoing health problems I am having to let my ferrets go along with my ferreting gear, i was going to keep them but it’s not fair as they’re from good working stock and need to be worked.

All three ferrets are jills and are litter mates and born the end of July so around  six months old and ready for entering.

I am giving the ferrets free of charge but they will not go to just anybody and they MUST go to an established forum member who can assure me they will be well looked after and worked regularly, any new members must be vouched for.

                                                             GEAR FOR SALE
My ferreting gear is for sale also, there is a well built double hutch with pitched and felted overhanging roof which is around three years old so plenty of life left in it, it’s been treated and I have fitted concealed hinges and padlocks to all four doors.

there are around 30-40 spun poly purse nets pretty much new, and around twenty or so older nets, there’s a box full of new, spare hard wood pegs along with the storage bag.

there is also a double bow back box with two compartments, this has also been treated .

There is a brand new game bag which I have never used and a small folding spade which has never been used, also an old game bag too.

Also included are the water bottles, dishes bedding, food and anything else that I can find.

I would prefer the ferrets and all the gear to go together but obviously the ferrets would need to go first.

Sorry but I Will not split the gear It all has to go together.

How does £100 for the lot sound?.

I shall try posting some photos but if you pm me your email address then  I have loads more i can forward.

I am based in Leeds in West Yorkshire

  14. Afternoon lads

Would any one know where I might be able to source a  multi shot mag conversion for my .177 S300?.

I’ve just recently bought the above rifle and was hoping to get a multi shot mag conversion, it’s going to be my main night hunting rifle with my Pard 008 , now it can be a bit fiddly loading single pellets during the day so I would imagine it would be a right pita at night.

Ive tried Rowan Engineering but they only do the .22 conversion.

Any help or info is much appreciated ?.

    Cheers
