New hutch

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've just completed new hutch for my two jills, by god did they need it.

Hutch measures 6ft x2ft x 2ft

Painted glossy white inside for easy cleaning.

Roofing is still to be added, i will be adding a detchable plastic frontage for the front of the hutch to stop rain getting in.

Anyone use a subtitute for wood shavings for the hutch, the mess is pissing me off. The inside of the hutch is painted in white gloss, so i could just leave it at that.

EDIT. Yeah i have a barrier at the front 2" abpve the floor, but the stuff still keeps on coming out.

just slot in some wood to act as a barrier ,if you dont put some shavings down they will be wading in piss as theres nowt to soak it up,mine scatter shavings about but it sweeps up :)

hi dan... i recently bought my ferrets a 10ft x 8ft x 8ft shed and covered the floor with vynil lino which is easy to clean, just a simple sweep up then i wash the floor down. in every corner i have a litter tray which all 6 of my ferrets use, you might get the occassional mess on the floor but other than that i find this works well. i had them litter trained within days and i use catsan litter thats expensive to buy but needs changing much more less than that cheap crap which works out cheaper cause i use less. out of interest you say you covered the floor in gloss ? id just point out one thing, obviously gloss is oil based and toxic. just make sure your ferrets dont have a habit of scratching or peeling away the paint off the floor. i used a pet proof non toxic wood sealer to put a certain height up the walls and gave it a few days to dry before putting them in. the lino would probably cost you a fiver or just ask your local carpet shop for an off cut. hope this helps.

IMO a sloping roof would have been better and if you

would have out in a mesh floor where they shite that

would help what you say is a mess ,If you would have made

it so that the roof lifts for access you would find it a lot simpler

and far better against the elements ;)

Yeah a sloping roof would have been better, in my haste i forgot about it. when roofing goes on there will be a slant for the rain water.

I use a small litter tray for their bog.

As for a roof access hutch i would have to be about 8ft tall to be able to open and get access properly.

I know now for next time, what do do and what not to do.

I always put a sloping roof on hutches, both my 8foot x18" hutches have sloping roof's, never actually tried using a hinged roof though.

GJ, the only thing i would say about the mesh panel floor, is the bits of shite cna get stuck in between the meshes

but if it works for you, then so be it ;)

I have the 2" timber "barrier" and it helps to an extent, but still get the shavings coming out, there's not much you can really do about, just take an extra minute to sweep it up. As FL says if you put nothing down, the piss will just sit, ready for the ferrets to roll around in.
