Hi everyone,

Just wonderd if any of you saw BBC look north last night regarding the BB GUN incident,, well what a total cock of shite that was, I sent am email straight away explaining that the gun used was a airsoft toy shooting plasic balls at very low verlocity but I as you can guess never recieved a reply, so today I sent the BBC another email,, ( attached) if any of you saw the programme it would be good to hear your feelings on this piece, it made me pissed right of,, yet again another national body can get something so far wrong and still run with it,,, anyway this a copy of my email,,

ATB,

Hi,

I sent you an email last night regarding your piece on BB Guns and the young girl that was allegedly injured by one, as of yet you have sent me no personnel response to my reply only your automated email, and I was wondering if you ever will, the reason I feel so frustrated by your coverage is that it was totally and utterly wrong, your presenter insinuated that you could buy a BB gun from the high street for less than two pounds and that the police have even said that to have one of these could result in a very grave response, this may be so if you had in fact been waving a true likeness firearm in the air, however I don't think for one moment that the firearm response team would have any trouble in identifying a toy gun with bright yellow plastic balls attached to the top, if they did we would all be in a very dangerous position, also its against the law in the UK to sell any air weapon to anyone under the age of 18, however anyone can buy a toy gun from their local shop,, you have mislead your viewers and misrepresented the airgun industry, I feel you kneed to make a formal apology to all concerned, I am attaching for your perusal a full and concise insight into UK airgun laws and strongly suggest you read it before you make untrue remarks, I will also be sending your article to firearms forums worldwide to gauge how other people feel about your TV piece,

Robin Smart.

Good on yer!

Me thinks though that the odds of you hearing from the BBC let alone getting an apology from them is about the same as me winning the lottery.

Hope they do though as you posting their response on the forum boards would make for interesting reading.

was it a proper "toy" bb gun that fires the crapp yellow balls ??? ?

i used to do airsofting and had a FN P90 BB gun that fired .25g balls and they hurt even at 5 metres.

Mine was accurate to 25 yards. and went beyond that.

the muzzle velocity of that was 310+ fps.

Here you go lads,

Would you belive it a reply from the BBC, and here it is, and then my reply back to them,

Dear Mr Smart

Further to my previous email I've now had an opportunity to properly investigate the details of your complaint. For clarity I'd like to consider each of your points in turn as follows.

You talk about an incident in which a girl was "allegedly injured" with a BB gun, there is however no doubt that the child was injured and the police launched an investigation. It was Humberside Police who described this as being a shooting with a BB gun, as you will have seen in the statement that we broadcast from them. Our reporting reflected the details of the incident that they provided. What we didn't include but you might find useful to know is that the police have been questioning a 14 year boy about this shooting and he has been cautioned in the context of attempting to cause GBH.

The gun which the reporter held during his report was bought in a toy shop and was described as being a BB gun. This seems to be a term that is used to describe any gun which fires a small round pellet irrespective of what it's made of. The gun we purchased did carry a warning that it could present a danger to the face and eyes if misued.

You question whether the police would be concerned about someone carrying this type of toy. All I can say in response is that police tell us that anyone who takes any weapon resembling a gun runs the real risk of provoking an armed response. There have been numerous incidents to demonstrate this in recent months including the arrest of a man last month in Brighton who was carrying a toy gun and the arrest of a boy in Salisbury who was carrying a 'cap gun'. There is an ongoing campaign to educate teenagers about the risks of toy guns. You're right that the toy gun we featured did have a container with bright yellow plastic balls attached to it but the point is that this can easily be removed making it far more difficult for police officers to easily recognise that it's toy.

As regards our understanding of the law we stated in our report that "BB guns, so called because they used to fire ball bearings can be bought without a licence by anyone who's 18 . They can be used under supervision by anyone over 14". My understanding is that this is a correct representation of the law as it stands. What the mother featured was calling for was a system of licences for BB guns.

In our report BBC Look North was seeking only to highlight the legitimate concerns of one local mother who's child had been injured by a gun that is sold as a toy. We are of course talking about a very small minority of people who misuse these guns, this is in no way relates to all those people who legitimately and legally use guns for sport. You suggest that we have misrepresented the airgun industry however we never mentioned airguns nor the industry in our report.

Thanks again for your comments about the programme.

Best regards

Jane Birch

Dear Mrs Birch,

Thank you for your reply, but I'm afraid we will have to beg to differ with regards to your report, as you would have seen by my attachment that I sent you regarding UK firearms law its clear that I understand the law in its entirety,

but what I am concerned with is that your report regardless of where the information came from was and is misleading, I have been involved in shooting sports for over forty years now and can honestly say that I have never seen a toy gun in a toy shop marketed as an BB-gun,

likewise I have never seen a BB-gun in a armoury marketed as a Air-soft gun, (which in-fact was the one you showed) also as you have pointed out a 14 year old boy as been cautioned for attempting to cause GBH, I'm sorry but attempting?

do you think for one minute if this boy had shot this poor girl three times with a BB-gun and the point I am trying to make is BB-gun,, and one of the ball bearings had hit her in the face that the police would have only issued him with a caution?

I'm sorry but I think not, I am not trying to be argumentative with this report but I feel strongly that its about time the media in its entirety reported their findings in a more fair and concise manner, and as for the arrest of a child with a cap gun then that just about say,s it all,

so if your report served its purpose for the mother of the child then all toy guns need to be licensed, because that's what it is was a toy, if you had no intentions of misleading the general public why did you not explain that the BB,s were in-fact plastic? once again thank you for your reply.

Kind Regards.

Robin Smart.

news? ha, no such thing, now its just all about the wow factor, terrorists in iraq? no such thing, insurgents? negative, their all part of the disbanded army who got hungry and were in knowledge of all the weapon dumps which were KNOWINGLY unguarded whilst KNOWING they were taking the weapons. not to digress too much, but its not news anymore, and thats not my opinion, thats fact, something the news forgot to emphasis.

"The gun which the reporter held during his report was bought in a toy shop and was described as being a BB gun. The amount of bs SPECULATION is another issue with the modern 'news', take the n.korea WMD fiasco, IF they use the satellite technology to power a missile which COULD be a nuke, then they COULD launch it far over japan. - this particularity got me thinking.... IF i could drive, i COULD google 'how to make c4' and i MIGHT fill up a car with said c4, i COULD drive down within range of No. 10 bs street, or outside a childrens home and i COULD cause death and destruction to some helpless children.

-Whers my story?

-peace

Amen that bro,

Rob.

As so well put by Jewk,

It all boils down to how things are put over, we all know how the press and media love to over exaggerate everything, well here is a rebuff by an American general to a radio interviewer that took him for a c,,,,nt I hope you like it it made me rollup,,

Best comeback line (On Gun Safety)

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently.

Love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:

We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting..

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:

I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:

I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:

Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went momentarily silent and the interview ended.

:clapper:

  • 2 weeks later...

klarakoi

I take it all back, the BBC did reply but no I didn't get to win the lottery.

Yet again the BEEB smudge the facts to avoid the truth that they did get their facts wrong.

Your follow up letter is bang on but they won't admit that they are a bunch of idiots anyway.

Love the interview snippet, wonder the same applies to Gordon Brown, is he equipped as the general suggested?
