Out of interest does anyone Pull and store eggs until they build up a quantity before incubation? If so what is the longest period you have stored a egg and its still succesfully hatched?

I have noticed in the past that some Hawks will leave eggs until the the second from last before sitting tight, they seem to cover the eggs sometimes in the evenings but don't start off incubation, The Goshawks normaly lay eggs on every third day so if she lays 4 there's sometimes 6 - 7 days before Incubation yet these eggs if fertile will still Hatch.....

when I pull the Gos eggs I want to store them until I make up a clutch! the thing is I can sometimes pull to 10 or slightly more which will put a huge gap from when the first egg is layed to the last, storing them for long periods would solve alot of this age gap but at the moment I daren't go past 5 days.....

cheers

I have only done it with poultry eggs mate but 10/14 days isn't a problem but then you start to lose a percentage every day after. A good way to store the eggs is in an incubator with the roller turned on ;)

No doubt about it you're right mate. the problem if I'm pulling the Gos's eggs is the big age gap from when I stick the first egg in the Inc to the last, they lay a egg every third day which put a huge gap from first egg Hatch to the 10th if I'm pulling that many....

If I can store them in clutches of 3 - 4 after taking the fresh egg weight it would be perfect just to get a few the same age when rearing, I just daren't take the risk until I'm 100% with something like a Gos egg......

I think you're right Butler! in the wild they seem to get the job done no probs. these captive raised Imprint Goshawks are a bit daft! some will lay eggs and not sit, some trash the nest in favour of laying on the board and some if a egg is left stand all over it! and some litteraly dismantle the nest while a egg is in there , If only people who pick birds up knew some of the shit we go through before it gets to the stage of penning and gone....

I'll suck it and see what the outcome is... if it works Good!! if not I'm going to be having a stay in funny farm :whistling:....
