GARY 76
Hi, This may have been asked before but here goes............. Is it illegal to shorten the stock on a gun? e.g. to cut the stock back to the pistol grip? or is this classed as a sawn off? The only reason i ask is for ease of carrying when useing with the terriers ect?? Cheers Gary Quote Link to post

shottyscotty 3
it is because i was told by the northern constabulary head of firearms , when i got my escort with the 30" barrel it wouldnt fit in my safe or any of my gun slips and i asked him about the folding stocks on hatson website and he said that i could not have one as they are illegal Quote Link to post
watchman 256
i asked the same question few months ago at my local gun shop completely legal to cut stock down you must not alter barrel lenth ,so ive gone ahead and cut stock down for my 8 year old son to use with good effect i hasten to add Quote Link to post

Firstly, to remain a shotgun it must have a barrel length NO SHORTER than 24" (approx 60cm). Secondly, to avoid being classed as a prohibited weapon it must have an OVERALL length of 60cm or more. The reason for the mixed units of measure is that both pieces of legislation were written at different times. As long as you don't break either of those rules you are OK shortening the stock. Cheers for replys, So if the barrells are 60cm then it is ok ? because the whole lenght will be over 60cm? Many thanks Gary Quote Link to post

Many thanks Gary No, remember, barrels must be 24", which is a gnat's knacker longer than 60cm. Yes, it's meant to be confusing. Quote Link to post
salukiwhippet 6
There are two sets of measurements that apply. Section one (FAC) must have a barrel of 300mm and an overall length of 600mm. Shorter would come under 'small firearms' which are essentially section 5 now. Section two (SGC) must have a barrel of 24" and an overall length of 40". Shorter than either becomes section 1.
