Guest smelly nelly
Hello, I like the odd bit of fishing on occasion but know only the basics (pointy end forward etc) so i like try for a few mackeral. as this, when its about aint too hard a fish to catch, especially with my minimal set up. But i can never remember when they start turning up. I live in south devon, can anyone give me an idea when i should start trying? Thanks in advance. Neil Quote Link to post

Neil Hi we catch mackerel here off devon/cornwall all year. They thin out a bit and tend to be small in the winter, but this time of year onwards to september, you will have no probs catching them.....just dont take the small ones home please, leave them to grow on a bit for later. willow1 0
ive caught good bags of Mackeral from around May onwards, but thats fishing from Berry head in Brixham Devon. I dont use feathers, i use those small artifical Shrimps on a line, they never fail. Summer time i will go down to Dartmouth as the kids can play on the sand while i fish o down to Abbotsbury Weymouth Cheers Quote Link to post

Depends how small mate. Joey mackerel are lovely grilled, or make excellent live bait for Bass, plus I don't think it will make any difference to later catches, no matter how many small you take, unless of course you're going to be netting them on a commercial scale.
