I also use used a hose. Just said 'In' once, sternly, and then hose. Only have to do it about 3 times. Funnily enough, my dog loves water, and playing with the hose, but with my serious face and voice on, he knew it was a punishment.

Is it possible that she can hear another dog howling/barking far away? Something you can't even hear? You say that nothing has changed: have you got new neighbours? New dog next door? Is she about to come in season? Has she been in season recently? Have you recently got another dog? Changed her food? Going through a dodgy time in your relationship (if you are in one that is)? Any number of things may have made her howl: try and eliminate them one by one as if she has always been quiet before then something is definitely upsetting her and you don't really want to punish her for doing something she can't help.

There is a thing called a Dap pheromone diffuser which you plug in and it emits pheromones which calm the dog down. Maybe look into that?
