Lurcher Problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 14month old saluki/grey/staghound that has a habit off carrying off hares. This is a particular problem as I hunt my dogs with a falcon. The bird gets really annoyed when the dog picks up the hare and runs off with the bird attached, the bird doesnt like having his head bounced off the ground.lol

All mt other dogs have been raised with the birds and dont contest the kill. This dog was got as a year old dog and has ingrained habits. She was kept outside in a run and basically taken out with a pack of other lurchers and free hunted on the ranch. Her breeder allows his dogs to eat the hares when they catch them and then walked back to the ranch. I want to break her of this habit, I have used a shock collar with limited sucess. She is so wired after a run she doesnt feel the shock! After a minute or so she will notice and release the hare when she has calmed down. By this point she has carryed the hare hundreds of yards. After a really hard run she is usually too tired to carry and will just stand there.

Anyone got any ideas as to how I can break her of this habit?

go back to basics with her. Once you have the basics right try her on the longline with a sharp 'no' or 'leave it' followed by a tug on the line when she tries to take the hare from the bird. Call her back to you then treat her.

I wont be going back to basics as she doesnt have any. She was like a wild dog when I got her. no training just let out and run then put back in the pen. She is better socialized now and coming on ok.I have all summer to get her right, just wanted to hear if anyone has had similar problems. I normally raise my own dogs and have never had to deal with a dog like this before. One the problems I had initially was that she wouldnt take treats and flinched away when you tryed to praise her. She has bonded better now so should be easier to train.

I will try the longline.

How about you teach her to respect the bird more?

Ie check her with the collar everytime she is very close to the bird so when the bird takes the hare she will have nothing more to do with it or a real nasty bird to teach a little more repect?
