A FEW PICS OF JOHN'S OPENING DAY...

Recommended Posts

The coati was a surprise but the skunks weren't. I had no idea she was bringing the coati until that morning when she said she was on her way. Great pics though and what a great day!

Wear Valley Ferret Rescue netted a little bit of vet funds which was excellent all thanks to John. We owe him a bottle of bourbon for that. I reckon he should have another show towards the end of the year. :clapper:

This young lady was a bit of a crowd puller a lot people wanted to have there photo taken with one of her animal's, but believe me more than once I had my heart in my mouth just watching some of the lurchers eyeing up the coati as it jumped from her to some one in the crowd, in my mind I could see it being snaped out of the air, but every thing went off ok and it was good to have her there

Thanks for the welcome you guys, was a nice day out :) i think the most interest came from a little JRT in the burger queue, who was itching to "meet" dandy..

however.. i knew that all you wonderful owners would have your dogs under full control of course ;)

and you will notice that at no time were the skunks put down, and that Dandy was in a secure harness, and again, had a hand near to grab him just in case. Coatis tend to stay up if they are feeling unsure.. whilst he leaps sideways, he does not tend to leap down! All three of the animals were under supervision at all times.

whilst i take them out, i do not tend to risk them.. its too much bad PR apart from the obvious damage it could do to both animals and humans who got in the way.

Skunks used to be used by the Native Americans, for vermin control, before the white settlers brought domestic cats over, i'd love to work them like you can ferrets, but not sure they would fit down the burrows!

whilst the coati looks relatively sweet and innocent, these animals were only removed from the Dangerous Wild Animals License in October 2007, they are fast, agile, powerful animals, with non retractable claws, a long jaw, large canine teeth, and a very impressive pressure per square inch bite power.

this is a replica coati skull, fyi..

Coatis are preyed on in their natural range, by things like Jaguar and dog.. however, its not always the predator that wins.. as Wiki says..

When provoked, or for defense, coatis can be fierce fighters: their strong jaws, sharp canine teeth, and fast scratching paws, along with a tough hide sturdily attached to the underlying muscles, make it very difficult for predators (e.g. dogs, jaguars) to seize the small mammal.

..

anyway... as said, he was under control, you guys had your dogs under control (as i would expect from a group of people who work their animals!) and i hope you enjoyed meeting him, and the skunks, Pro and Snuff.

again, thanks John, for the invite :)

Donnie, Im looking to make it a twice a year event, spring and summer show also looking at running another spring and summer show with lurcher and terrier racing trying to sort some where with a bar and more parking, this would make a total of four extra shows through the year in the north east, with money beiong in short supply at the minute it would be good to get some thing going up this end of the country to save lads having to travel
