Paddock Maintenance

Recommended Posts

I do a bit of paddock maintenance, mainly mowing, topping, & rolling, but I don't travel great distances or take on any contracts.

I don't think there's a great deal of money in it if you have to buy all the kit from scratch. Depends on the area you live in too - bigger horse establishments often have a little traccy and a few bits of kit anyway, the others tend to ask local farmers to do jobs for them. If you're on the edge of town where there are lots of little pony paddocks you may be able to get quite a bit of work. But the work is very seasonal and weather dependant. If you already have the kit and the spare time it's definitely worth considering, but I don't think you could make enough if it was your only source of income.

If you're buying new machinery for the job, go for a smaller tractor rather than a giant 4 wheel drive job - most of the work I pick up is because I have a smaller traccy and a lot of farmers only have monster tractors these days, which are just too big to negotiate narrow gateways and 1/2 acre paddocks!

If you're going to take on spraying you will need to get certified too
