bucknut 1
Right - Terrier mother had 6 pups all fine. 3 pups went at 6 weeks (last weekend) - all pups are on semi solid food, having the odd suckle off mother. Mother growling and snapping at other 3 pups, teets ripped abit due to teeth of pups. So last night seperated pups from mother, tonight mother howling as if in pain two teets full and red hot so mother and pups reunited after feeding time and after snaps and growls mother allows them to feed of her emptying teets. all happy and asleep. But other three pups going this wekend - 2 on saturday and 1 sunday. worried about milk not drying up and this mystitus that can happen. Any advice for this week? can you get medication to dry up milk etc? oh and the other thing is on sunday im getting a cocker spaniel pup of 7 weeks old which i was going to keep seperate for a while - do you think the Border terrier mother will let her feed from her or what? cheers
skycat 6,174
Contact Dorwest Herbs on 01308 897272 and order some Urtica Urens: homeopathic remedy: make sure you tell them its to dry the bitch up as there are two strengths of this stuff: one increases milk supply and the other reduces the production of milk. When you get the tabs don't touch them with your fingers: the lid of the tube unscrews and you just twist to let a couple of tabs into the lid, then tip from the lid into the bitch's mouth: they dissolve instantly. This stuff really works! But there's no point in giving any remedy if you keep the bitch with the pups all the time. They are more than old enough to spend most of their time without her now and its not fair on the bitch to force her to be with them all the time at this age. Meantime, just let the bitch into the pups for a few moments, enough to take off the excess of milk, then take her out again and out of sight and sound of the pups. Also, take her out for exercise to distract her from the pups and the fact that they exist!!

Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Is the gland [teat area ]red, swollen and hot and is she lethargic ,no energy. If you spray a bit of milk on a white hanky you will see dark yellow bits and maybe a bit of blood .She may have mastitis already .Drying her off will help but the mastitis will need antibiotics if she is to be free from future problems .Vets really i think . PS hard to diagnose a problem purely from a discription .
bucknut 1
many thanks for replies. she seems to be drying up no discharge as stated - started to use epsom salts and seems to be working cheers
Bevwallis 7
As said before if she has mastitus she needs to be seen by a vet- however if she is just full then i would allow the odd feed to drain her off but cut her food right down for a few days- that will help. She will almost certainly suckle the spaniel pup- that will delay her drying up - if they are allowed together
