I might be on a wing and a prayer but........

Recommended Posts

Well here goes......i recently had my renewal forms come through for my fac which runs out on 6/4/09. decided to get an sgc as well and so asked for it coterminus.... Lancs were really good in that within 2 days i had the receipt confirmation and 7 days later the feo appeared.

he told me there would be no problem with the renewal or sgc and to start looking for a shotgun. [i know that its not a done deal till the paperwork arrives so to speak, but decided to go looking for a 12 bore]

within days, and a few shops later i found a secondhand 12 bore and put my deposit on it. it was then that what the feo sunk in regarding the licence....my sgc will only start on the renewal date in april so no gun till then....

my question is can i ring the firearms dept and ask for my renewal date to be moved, in essence backwards [losing me 3/4 weeks of my current licence] so that it will renew in march and i can then get my shottie. as my sgc will start at the same time as my fac due to it being coterminus. in effect as i have said it is me who loses out in this case by however many weeks i lose on my current cert. it is probably the sign of high impatience but i have time on my hands till april when i go back to work and it seems a shame i cant get this shottie now...

has anyone had any similar experience with this before i ring the firearms office to enquire.....

This is quite common..it's inevitable if you think about it...ask them to start immediately and tell them you are happy to lose out on a few weeks ticket money....many people get stuffed for a year or two money when this happens, but it saves a lot in the future!!!

Well after much tooing and froing with my firearms department, being put on hold...being transferred to another person, discussions between firearms staff I got the news today......no they cant bring my coterminus licence forward from 190409 to say next week as if they change the date the certificate becomes unlawful??!!

The only thing they could suggest was getting a separate sgc and fac, and starting the sgc next week. when it comes to 5 years down the line they suggest that i either pay the £40 for the sgc renewal and then cancel it 6 weeks later to start a coterminus licence in line with my fac, or hand in my sgc when it runs out, putting any shotguns in storage for 6 weeks, then go for the coterminus to start in line with my fac.

they admitted they had never had a problem like this before. of course to get the sgc next week they are needing the £40 [£10 already paid for in the coterminus application] to process it as a sgc licence. anyway rather than lose my permission because i cant target the pigeon i have stumped up to get it next week.

I think I must have missed something here!!!

I am struggling to believe this...you have either got the idiot temp or the new boy who has just come off traffic duty...that is bullshit...this sort of thing happens all the time!! Very few people start life with a coterminus, they get them somewhere down the line.

You simply trade in and cancel your FAC NOW, and start a new coterminous immediately, or at the very worst just wait until the renewal date of your FAC, 6.4.09 you said originally, and ask them to start the coterminous then.

I have even known regions to issue coterminous certificates with DIFFERENT FAC/SGC start and end dates BUT still charge coterminous renewal fees.

Talk to the BASC Firearms people...they will sort them out!!!

Hi thanks for the vote of confidence!!!! i was reasonably sure that in some way shape or form it could be done but after a 20 minute phone call involving god knows how many people in the office at their end i resigned myself to paying the extra now....so as not to lose my permission...but in 5 years time i will be going to BASC and asking them to intervene/help out.

I am happy though that the advice wasn't given solely to get me to stump up more money, it was given out of a firm belief that they were right...although if others have had this done then it does show a substantial lack of knowledge on behalf of their office.

Also after 20 mins and me suggesting one thing after another i decied that i didnt want to wind them up any more than necessary but as i have said i wont let it drop next time!!
