bogwoppit 0
I am thinking about applying for FAC just for clearing bunnies that always seem to be 20 to 30 yards beyond air rifle or shotgun but reading an earlier post am totaly baffled by the different calibres and letters eg. 22lr 22rimfire 22centerfire 17hmr 17wmr could someone advise which and why. SportingShooter 0
Perhaps it would be better first off to explain what they are and their differences. The major difference in rifles is the way the powder is ignited, We have two systems that are in operation today namely Rimfire and Centrefire. The Rimfires ignite the powder by the hammer crushing the rim of the case where the ignition compound is held. Hence Rimfire. There are four calibres in Rimfire, namely .22LR, .22 WMR, .17HMR and .17Mach2. The first two fire a .224in bullet, the latter a .174in bullet. Rimfires are first and foremost Vermin rifles, used for small ground game such as Rabbits, Crows, Maggies etc LR = Long Rifle, WMR = Winchester Magnum Rimfire, HMR=Hornady Magnum Rimfire, Mach2 is just a brand name. The WMR is the most powerful of them all. The most popular would be the .22LR used mainly for Rabbits at medium range and is very quiet with a Moderator. The others are all louder even with a Mod but give enhanced performance. With me so far? Centrefire? Where do I start The ignition system for a centrefire is that of a separate primer, in the centre of the bottom of the case, hence centrefire. There are a plethora of different calibres out there in Centrefire. And their main use is for killing the larger quarry, from Fox sized game up to the largest of the Big Five. They fire a massive array of bullet weights and sizes for different situations. They are very great deal more powerful than a rimfire and will travel a greater distance. Hope this helps a bit SS Quote Link to post
