jrt starting to go to ground

Recommended Posts

My wee jrt bitch that I have used mainly for bushing and a bit of ferreting has started of late to go down holes. Started to go down once the ferrets had been through and the other day scented around a rabbit set and then flew straight down the hole. She started digging herself at bolt holes too and after digging with her, we come to chambers with bedding materials. Only small holes so assume they where rats. Then on mooches is going down some and leaving others. Am very pleased that she is starting to do this too, as I never thought she would. Will be buying a collar and hope to get a bit of fun next season. Have to keep her of the bunnys for a bit now too.

Only bad point is I recently parted with my lurcher, so would be left with no ferreting dog, so I took out my terrierXspaniel for a trip and she was perfectly behaved. Shock to me as when she was a pup she was too frantic to be any good, so at least I have a ferreting partner still, and two dogs have new jobs.

My little JRT does the same, she's 14 moths old, been doing it for about 3 months now. She's a pain out ferreting now, I've got to keep her close otherwise down she goes!

Hopefully I'll get to test her properly some point next season. ;)

mine is coming 4 years old now, but has seriously switched on this year, again likely cos she been doing more. She is only around 10" tts so has no trouble with the smaller holes. I know that jrt's aren't always as popular as other breeds and as much as I like patts myself, and am tempted to get one in the future, I will probably always stick to the russels. Just need to get a good line going. Although I dont know how well the shorter legs cope in certain situations.

At the moment on the bit of ground I have. I know that all the rabbit warrens aren,t that deep. And only are rabbit holes. So not to bad if she enters as noever that deep. I have been expanding though and some new rabbit holes are a bit ambiguous as to what can be using them, so will probably keep her back from that ground until I get a collar for her. I am in the middle of sheep country and at the right time of year I can hear the foxes calling from my front door step, so I know they are there haha
