Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Allgame -mate ,you are showing a distinct lack of knowledge if you believe we breed for brawn only .If a terrier cant find it cant stay .It goes hand in hand ,its just expected so not often mentioned . Your dogs that do a stint in and then out are useless over here ,a fault not to be bred from but hey horses for courses and if your dogs honestly do what you require of them , then who are we to criticise . allgame 0
i go by what i read and i doubt any other man would see it any different of corse there are exceptions, but few, the imported patts that have come from your country that i have seen and spoken to the owners about have been quite usless over here to big to dumb and to tough, excelant to cross with but thats it, as you siad horses for corses but when im tolled my dogs jack because they go from hole to hole well i thought id say what i think of dogs that dont do that Quote Link to post
spiderpig 39
i think everyone is missing the point a bit. dogs should know the game but sometimes a dog will mess with rabbits if nothing else at home and hasnt been worked in a while so is keen.mess is the word though, now staying or baying is a different matter,to dig to a dog baying at a rabbit should only have one outcome........... my dogs will chase rabbits on top, mess with odd hole enterances if running loose but a quick shout is all thats needed, wont stay and act like its a fox,,,,,, but everyones opinion is different but i agree that a dog should know what its all about, a very very well known and respected terrier man from my part of the country often took all his on big rabbit days when all the holes had been stunk out ect and he never woried that they would start rabbiting....on the other hand he was there when a well known russel breeder dug nearly 10 foot in chalk to a dog baying at a rabbit.. a dog is a hunting dog end of but there is a fine line betweeen messing and been serious, and baying is a no no.only same as digging cubs.,some dogs are shit and just mess all day long as too much scent ect ect and others can do it.every dog is different so take each one on its own merrits,if it rabbits down an earth either keep it away or get rid Quote Link to post
allgame 0
well as you siad i do have nothing else to go on of your terriers but what is siad on this forum, and if this forum dosent give an accurate represntaion of the terriers on it then what does? yes i am 18, and i'v never cliamed to be an expert but it seems i must be close to the truth for you to think so, i'll happily share with you why i 'seem' so educated when i comes to these dogs that i could ovbiously have no real experience with because i am so young and ignorant, iv only had experience with running dogs and terriers for the past 7 years and to be perfectly truthfull its become my obsesion, iv owned many many dogs in that time and killed hundreds if not over a thousand foxes, iv hunted with dozens of different poeple and hundreds of different dogs each doing things there own way, im not the average teenager i dont talk i listen, and i learn, i'll talk to hundreds of hunters and listen to every word they have to say many of them with 30 plus years of experience and yet even after hunting for that long many are wrong when it comes to alot of things iv found some poeple know nothing about dogs but know alot about foxes and some visa versa, yet from each person iv learnt somthing and combined with my own experiences iv figured out alot in a short amount of time. this might help my case aswell iv been asked several times by the local hunt club to all there terrier work for them for this coming season i was also asked to do it last season aswell thats means one of two things it takes no real understanding of terriers or the way they hunt to work at a professtional sporting club by myself or i know my sh*t i have nothing more to say Edited February 24, 2009 by allgame Quote Link to post
victor 10
WOW, im not agreeing with allgame cus he's a fellow aussie and i know him on alot of outher forums, but whats wrong with working a terrier on rabbits as well as foxes? a GOOD terier wont bother with a fecking rabbit if there is a foxc to be delt with, just liek a good runnign dog. there is a fox about and he chasing one and a rabbit pops up he'll still chase that fox. stumpie (a JRT) has caught so many rabbits and still holds the fox record around this areia. not this year but still over all! darrell jnr 16
horses for courses different strokes an all that myself i,ve had terriers ,worked or been around them most if not all of my 39 yrs,for me my terriers dont start on rabbits, it,s rats, rats and more rats occasional feral cat then foxes....dont like a terrier mad on rabbits as people said earlier it,s no fun digging to a rabbit, although saying that i do have a terrier that would work a rabbit ,given half a chance but i got him at 4 yr old and all he,d seen was rabbits ,now i,ve had him 6 months and i,ve dug to him 7 times to foxes..he,s a demon on them thats why i keep him, even tho not totally proven hisself yet. sorry rambled on a bit there lol..darrell.
