blando 0
i was given a jill that somone found but i had no idea how old it was, recenlt it died leaving the poor hob on his own and like you said they are not the same animals enless thay have company, so 2 jills should give me a good start, i was also given the hob by a mate but he doesent know how old he is is there anyway i can tell? hee seems really healthy. ginge2k6 0
Every time i say something i get shot in the f****n back :realmad: . What i meant to say is Ferrets don't HAVE to be kept in pairs. I would rather have two ferrets together. I was just trying to help keep the the lads options open. ps I am going to the bottom of the garden to eat worms. Quote Link to post
Guest RobW71
To be fair ginge bud, it wasn't really a good option to give. A polecat lives alone. Regards Rob Quote Link to post
Guest jass
99% of ferrets wil work given the chance. just some better than others to produce a high percent of good workers in a litter, both parents need to be top notch workers.ie. friendly, a good nose, with good natural instincts so theyl ratch for the rabbit until they catch it or it bolts. ive seen a lot of ferrets come back out as if theres nothing in the set, but when u try a reliable one to check, u get a bolt. id sugest buying 2 or 3 ferrets at a time from the same litter one will stand out above the others. and last but not least never buy or breed off a ferret that shys away back into the hole as u try to pick it up. i ruined a good 6 generation line of poleys by introducing a hole shy hob into the blood. COMPO 54
SOME GOOD ADVISE ON HERE its great aint it you ask 20 ferreters the same question and get 20 different answers i would say get more than one, a pair is a minimum, if your hob has been vasectomised get two jills that is a brilliant little set up the jills do most of the work and the hob brings them out of season, plus sometimes you may want a hob for a particular job or just need a third ferret. i reckon all ferrets will work, when myxi hit the UK the number of working ferrets dropped and then as the numbers have crept back up so has the number of working ferrets, not all of these are from out and out generations of workers there was just not enough working ferrets to go round so a lot are from pets/labs etc... and i think that unless you had the hoblet (when two jills and a hoblet are a better set up) then i would also recommend two hobs, my brother has two that i bred that are out the same litter and have lived all their lives together, they are as happy as a pig in muck they are in their 3rd year now, i think they have a gay relationship but they are happy and work well i also reckon the working deeper argument has more to do with the age/experience of the ferret and its diet than its breeding , an older ferret that has done loads of ferreting learns that rabbits live deeper and wont just skim the tops of warrens, also a ferret fed on rabbit associates the smell with dinner and will pursue it further than one fed on crap or dried food What ever you get good luck COMPO Quote Link to post
