Back Stabbath 1
Yeah, raw diets are really the best thing ever for dogs. Just think of it in relation to yourself. Which is better for you, takeaway's and mcdonalds and convenience foods every day? Or Fresh fruit and veg, and fresh hunted meat? Just look on the internet on breeders sites or whatever, for people saying how much their dogs health and their breeding programmes have improved since feeding raw. Dog food is really like junk food for dogs. Thats not to say never feed it to them, lost of people can't afford 100% raw. You can get some really good, no-filler, holistic dog foods these days, and suitable scraps should be fed to dogs too. You can probably get diet plans off the internet, but its not necessary to have any strict rules for feeding. I mean you don't make sure you have 20% peas, 50% potatoes, etc. for your dinner! DON'T WORRY about carbohydrates. Dogs can derive glucose from both meat and fat, whereas we can just get it from starch and sugar. Dogs don't strictly need carbohydrate, but their bodies will get glucose from carbs before making it from meat, so if you need a dog to have a lot of energy very quickly, starch and sugar will work fast. Fibre is good to have in the diet too. You can give them a mostly meat diet, or a mostly veg/potato/rice/other diet. I would say, if you can afford it, go for mostly meat. Veg is also important tho. Grate carrot with their meals. With either diet, offal MUST be included! NEVER feed a dog all muscle meat, its very bad for them. Bones are important too. You can give your dog a hunk of meat for dinner and nothing else one day, then rice scraps/kibble and a few meat offcuts the next day. No need to be rigid, unless you're feeding a pregnant/lactating bitch or something. You can feed raw chicken bones. My dogs get whole raw wings. Big raw bones must be given also. They are very healthy. My dogs will take apples, and turnips occasionally too. I always grate some carrot for the dogs (must be grated for them to digest properly). Take advantage of puppies willingness to eat anything! Give the odd apple, salad scraps, spinach, whatever! Lots of live nutrition. Leerburg.com has some good idea's of what to feed. (Along with some silly stuff unless you're rich, like dried alfalfa) For now mate, you can just give the dogs some deer heart and chicken for dinner. Don't worry about giving them too much of anything. You can give it with some kibble if you like. Just remember to include offal in dogs diets. Its very important for them. Good luck! Back Stabbath 1
Doga, good point. It would be a good idea to introduce just a little meat mixed with kibble if your dogs are always given 100% kibble.
