12g ammo and the law

Recommended Posts

We all know the hoops that we have to jump through when buying, holding and storing ammo. But what is the legal situation with shotgun shells? Yes you have to produce the ticket to buy them, but there's no limit, and no specific storage requirements stated.

So is there anything in law stopping guy having a box of shells tucked away in the back of the wardrobe after he's packed up shooting?

No ulterior motive in posting this, other than I found a couple of 12g shells in the back of a garage the other day, must have been there 20 years+. And no, I don't think it's a particularly good idea ;);)

its only law that you have a cerificate to purchased shotgun ammo.you DO NOT need one to be in possesion of them, they do not have to be locked up either im unsure of the limits but as far as i can remember you can have up to a maximum of 2000 at home any more requires a explosives certificate

You don't have to hold an SGC to possess Shotgun Ammunition. Only to purchase it, and which you have to be over 17 for.

Shotgun ammunition does not have to be secured in the same way as Rifle ammunition, but if push comes to shove and you have left it lying around, the licensing dept will take a grim view.

You are allowed to have 5kg of "Shooters Powder" in your possession before you require an Explosives Certificate.

Now, off hand I can't remember if that means 10,000 or 20,000 cartridges. It's something like that.

I wouldn't have any ammo in my house without a FAC or shotgun cert, you know what the police are like,Iam sure they would not leave the house until they have turned it over good style.

they would be looking for the item that goes with the ammo.

Just get rid or give them to someone who can use them, they are not worth the hassle

My sentiments entirely. It was more of a pub argument than anything else, mate said you weren't allowed to be in possesion, I didn't know of any reason/law that stopped you. Not a good idea tho admitted.

Just makes licensing laws even more muddled to be honest

I once had a car go up in smoke, had just been to the local gunstore and was on my way to the farm. Fuel injection pipe burst and the motor went up. Coppers and Fire brigade were a little wary when I mentioned there was 1000 12g shells in the boot :whistling:

For whatever reason I had 15,000 cartridges in mind before Explosives Cert required so I guess we are both pretty close!!

I often have 3-4000 carts in the house but I'm up around 6500 at the moment as I'm looking after a pals Beretta and ammo, not sure too many people would often want to carry many more at home anyway..apart from cost these days, thats a big pile and you would probably need to get the stress analysts in for the weight!!

They aren't even in the main bit of the house. I keep them in the outhouse (Double Glazed and de humidified I might add  ) to comply with the Home Insurance.

Something you should all be thinking about too. If the insurance company do a investigation after the worst case scenario and find them, which you haven't declared, it is null and void I'm afraid :(

Thats the bit I was pointing out, you have to account for say every last .22 cartridge, but can keep 1000's of 12g shells in the outhouse/garage/shed/back garden???

I would love to see the expression on the face of the ins underwriter SS, when they read your ins application; "youve got what?, you keep them where? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
