Stock & Barrel Repair

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently aquired an Anschutz Model 54 Super Match .22LR as a project to keep me busy over the winter months.

The stock is not in the best condition so I was thinking about doing it up and wondered if anyone had any advice or links to point me in the right direction? ....also, the barrel has a small area which has been filed flat, what I can only assume was to accomodate a scope with a large objective, does anyone know if you can refill the flat area?

I've never refurbished a barrel or a stock before so please be gentle with me :icon_redface:

I look forward to any replies and will post the progress throughout.

Cheers :D

Stock should be easy mate, sand down to remove all the scratches/ dents then finish with your choice of oil or laquer. Oil will be best IMHO.

Barrel is a bit of a bugger, had a similar issue recently myself, but removed the rubber grip from the sight and replaced it with a bit of inner tube. Filing the barrel for clearance? :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Probably just cosmetic tho'. live with it or car body filler and a bit of matt black spray

Thank you for the fast replies :D

I'll stick some photo's up as soon as my camera battery has charged :icon_redface:

Forgot to mention that I actually have two stocks for the gun. One appears to be the original stock and I also have a Mcmillan Bench rest stock ..... both need work !!!

The McMillan stock has what looks like a home glass bedding job done on it and it looks pretty bad!

The original stock also has a rubber but pad epoxied to the metal of the adjustable butt!! It don't look pretty, but it should clean up nice!

The gun was purchased from a friend here in Norway, he received it with the filed barel years ago! Wasn't too interested in the gun at first, but I got it for nothing and thought I might be able to get it looking half decent in the end!

This looks like it may be a lot more work than I imagined!

On a side note, does anyone know how I can find out the age of the gun?

Pics coming soon!

Thanks again

Jonathan

So do you think the barrel is safe, how much would it cost for a new one?

I was hoping I could do something with this barrel, don't know if there is the metal equivalent of "Polyfilla" :icon_redface:

Well it it a .22lr, but that is quite deep filing. I wouln't be happy with it on my rifle.

I would be interested with other peoples opinions.

:o Should be pretty safe, at least if it bursts it will blow upwards ;):D

I couldn't use a gun in that state, every shot would have me cringing, having said that it's probably been shot like that for years.

At the end of the day its your face on the breech.

I'm going to take it to a gunsmith so he can have a look and hopefully give me some advice!

Apparently it has been used for years in this state and there have been no problems! and it is a heavy barelled target gun so I'm thinking it should be ok!

Have got two plans in my head:

1) (easy - cheap!) Fill the filed area and re-black the barrel

2) (hard - expensive!)Remove the filed area, obviously this would be done by a gun smith and depending on the cost migh be more work and expense than it worth!

So..... any advice on stock refurishment, will I need to remove the original oil/varnish off first using stripper or can I just go straight in with the sand paper?

Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Jonathan

Don't bother with stripper, have you got one of those little triagle footed electric sanders? detail sanders I think they're called. Wear a mask.
