lucky 578
right my idea of an "allrounder" is a dog that is good on the lamp, running the beam and retrieving rabbits back to hand, a dog that will work with ferrets, mark and work around nets, this dog has to be able to take winter hares during the day, and all species of deer,o.k with the exception of red stags... the same dog must be able to work with terriers and dispatch foxes on its own, both on the lamp and daytime, take feather when the oppurtunity arises, be able to work on his own hunting up and finding quarry then despatch it, be 100% stock broken, 100% with people and other dogs..... now who can honestly say they own or have owned such a dog ???? i cant and if i did the dog would be wasted in my hands as 90% of the above is not my thing, but if there is or was such a dog, i'd say it would be worth its weight in gold and a real pleasure to own such an animal.... Ahhhhhhhhhhhh but where would it be doing all these things??? You see.... for the next 2 months only a saluki will catch a hare on the fens, so does this dog have to do it there??? Or are we allowed to catch these mystical beasts on our own errr how do they put it... cabbage patch? I reckon there is no dog could do all that is listed consistently. Besides, who actually hunts that variety of game or who has the ground? Most dogs pick up their injuries on rabbits I feel so who would risk a good hare dog on all of the above? you can kill your hares where ever you want, i usually kill mine with the car when there crossing the road, accidentally ofcourse.... whin 463
had a few good allrounders but one particular bitch shees here nine past could bolt rabbs ferret , pull roe kill afox and catch a hare , you could and can still send her over a feild rake it out and sheel put game up and catch it ,had lots of people out seeing her do it , shees colli type had one saluk cross who could catch a fox catch boltin rabbs and mark course hares and roe and fetch but only realy two out of a good few ,most were bred for roe hares fox or rabbits and roe hares fox , my l deer dogs pre ban were all 26 27 28 and not always good at tite spots on rabbs end off, but got a bitch whose done it in stile but was out alot and well only way ,none of my dogs fight unless someone wants to mix it ,got pics of her and plenty peolpe saw her do it for real , takes a good dog with plenty drive to do it in stile .two of mines will retreive in back seat no prob when driving stubbles or roadsiding , thtas what i look for in a good allrounder and take birds if they get the chance, and your write you have to have time to do it as in live were the game is as i do Quote Link to post
