Chicken Ark or House Plans ??

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to get a few chickens in for family use.. I am looking at having no more than 6-8, and would prefer some of the traditional breeds such as "Cornish Game" or similar. Does anyone have any plans for suitable housing to accomodate this amount of birds ?? Looking to have nest boxes, roosting area and detachable run area. Any pictures/diagrams or ref's to specific publications would be appreciated..

i recently madea chicken house from a modified wooden packing case, obviously a very large one you can get them from transport companies, knock the ends off and replace with panel which are shaped like the end of a house ie a square with a triangle on top. then add a double slopiing roof with a hinged setion for cleaning, a sliding door and detachable nesting boxes so you can take them off and sweep litter straight out, some split wood perches and yuor done :) clear as mud

hi there and welcome to the world of chicken keeping im no expert but iv just built my second ark (as this sh++e is addictive .lol)

all you need to think about is ?

how many chicken small or large fowl

how safe do thay have to be .i.e any cats or dogs that can get them

weather you want it static or not

now you will need 1 nest box for 5 birds but more the merryer

a 3ftx4ft house will hold 4-5 large fowl or 6-8 bantams

the simaplest house is just four walls and the nest boxes on the inside oh dont forget the roof and floor to .lol

chickens need perches to rest and sleep on and for large birds a pieace of 2x1 with the edges sanded to a rough round edge will do .

ok iv not made any plans as yet but this wesite as all diffrent hen houses that people have made so it will give you an idea.

I keep mine in an 6ft high enclosed + roofed wire pen with the roost and nest boxes inside . I let them out every day but if I cant for some reason then at least they can move about. The roof keeps the foxes out and means that straw and wood chips stay dry and clean for longer.

Arks are quite easy to make nothing fancy to them, just use 2x1 battens for the frame1/2 ply for the flooring and the housing section and top frame 4x1 decking board.

Plus your chicken wire

I will put up a picture of mine when I sort my camera out later
