TRANSPORTING YOUR AIR BOTTLE

BIGPETE

Recommended Posts

Just in case this is of use to any one, I thought I would share this.

Fed up with wedging my wellies or what ever else I could find to stop the bottle moving about in the boot of the car I came up with this idea. It has cost me just over a fiver so far. It is expanded polystyrene cut to shape. I have some general purpose spray adhesive that does not attack the polystyrene so I am going to fix some cheap fabric to it so it is harder wearing, even gaffer tape would do , I think! How do you guys transport your bottles??

Well done BIGPETE a good idea :clapper: , but I think that in a bit you'll have the why's wherfor's and the law read to you by folk who know such stuff :whistling: , I know exactly where we stand when we transport them and like yourself have had them all shapes in the boot, so I'm not gonna knock someone for making an effort

Cheers for that mad al, I asked in the local dive shop to see how they did it, the reply was, "they dont move about much when they are made up into full dive sets!" a big help that was so lets see how other folk do it . This is mk2 but I know with a luggage/ratchet strap over it it is well secure.

Well i think its a great idea mate , i might even try it myself , where did you get the polystyrene ? and how did you cut is so well ?? Mind you , ive had things delivered that have been packed in a box ,with expanding foam (in sealed bags ) all round it so it takes the shape of the package .

It was cut on a cnc hot wire machine (guvvy job!)mate. It was cut as whole then into two halves. it could be made to stand up but shutting your boot lid lid may prove to be a tad tricky if one were to try it that way. I have seen the other material you are talking about, it is expanding gap filler type foam, you are right, it may work but it might get a bit messy.

Cheers,

Pete.

Ok, here's one i made earlier . . . . lol

Tank1.jpg"]Tank and cradle number 1 shot:

Tank2.jpg"]Tank and cradle no 2 shot

I made it from left over off cuts from when i made my Walnut thumb-hole stock.

The cradle holds the tank securely in the boot, and on the underside are four screws (1 in each corner) screwed to 'only just' come through the bottom by around 1/8 - these dig into the boot carpet and stop the whole deal moving around the boot area.

Works every time!

Grim.

good idea that mate the only thing i will say is that as it is

its not very robust so i would think about making a wooden case out of ply to hold and protect the polystyrene...

just and idea

or even mdf

Plenty strong enough bud, I weigh 17 stone and can stand on it without a problem when it is covered in gaffer tape. It compresses slightly but no breakages. For a fiver, if it lasts me a year or so that will do me fine. Not very good with a saw, more of a wood butcher than a joiner!

Thanks for the feed back, appreciate it.

Buster! :)

How's it going mate? fair i hope;)

Yes, you are correct mine is a 3 ltr, 300 Bar tank.

As regards making one for you, if you can get the Walnut (or whatever timber you prefer ) let me know if you want me to send you (by postal mail) some life size plans for it and you can use them to make the same thing for yours?

PM or e mail me if you like chap, and we can discuss 'terms' . . . .;)

All the best bud,

Grim.

Reckon Grims is a cracker, mine's the Aldi version!!! All the R+D as far as the product goes was done though, weight/ compressability (200kpa @10% was plenty) keep the "scoop" low to ensure it is not top heavy (wont roll when/if you have to brake hard) I think mk3 will have to double as light weight seat or rest but I will see how it goes.

All the best and happy Christmas to all.
