good to be back doing daytime ratting

Recommended Posts

a smoker was used on a few, rest were dug out.some were living in a rotting tree trunk which took a bit of time to shift....................i dont get many rats compared to some people i know but the variety of places i hunt them on day and night means that i never get tired of ratting.

:hmm: i guess it depends on your location but is a smoker escentual?

in some places yes,i dont go ratting with ferrets so if it cant be dug out fairly quickly ill use a smoker.the rats in one big tree trunk wouldnt have moved without it.you could have maybe smashed it up but i dont think the keeper would be very happy.then theres the times when rats are in tree roots, old stone walls, under concrete floors etc etc etc.

even if i did use ferrets i wouldnt put them into some places, same as you wouldnt risk a terrier in some earths.

having said that most of my daytime rats are taken by either digging them out or when a farmer is lifting bales about.

Cheers for the reply mate. happy hunting

no problem

some people take far more rats than i do without having to use a smoker.i struggle to find rats for most of the year and have to get what i can using any method available.if i didnt use a smoker or go out at night lamping rats my dogs would take far less rodents than they do now................

Well I do enjoy ratting once a week (hopefully a bit more over Christmas) and an hour or so bushing every night flushing out the odd rabbit and other vermin but hardly would call it hunting.

we had another look out ratting this afternoon but snapped the shovel shortly after starting.this meant that we could only try and smoke out the rats but that wasnt always working.anyway we messed about as best we could and got a few.

plenty of time left to get the remaining rats before the pheasant rearing starts again.
