Kay 3,709
earlier this year when i took on the greyhound bitch she was perfect except for snatching food leftovers if there were any about , having a lad 14 dont help leaving plates etc & empty packets laying around, so i appealed to the board for some sugestions & one was to tap the dog with a rolled up news paper , i did this once & as i did it used the '' leave it'' command . it worked a treat & we havent looked back. When i got this second one on monday when he arrived i really thought i must have been totally off my head to agree to take on a 4 year old 27 inch entire ex track dog on , ffs i was tearing my hair out by wednesday , he has no mannors whatso ever , he ignores me , is unresponsive & when out the crate is manic like you wouldnt believe I have never seen anything so food obsessed , he is constantly sniffing out stuff to steal, jumps up work tops, drags things out to get behind them to find bits on the floor, the idea was to have him out so many times a day to get him to come to me whilst calling his name & reward him, oh no he has plans of his own So i had to do something tonight it was getting silly , so after making sure there was not a single thing he could get food wise, everything put away i let him out, he did the usual sniffing in the areas he had previously tried to steal things from & i remembered the news paper thing, so grabbed the free rag , rolled it up & tapped his arse with it using the '' leave it'' command At last a response , the look of shock on his face was so funny, stopped the sod in his tracks , every time he attempted to jump up the top i yelled leave it , he came to me immediatly after being checked where i called him a good boy & gave him a small tit bit Its a small breakthrough but i needed to get him to come to me previously he hadnt untill tonight, so tomorrow i will see if its a one off or if it has began the long journey we will have trying to get him to an acceptable level Thanks Wilf for the paper tip Today yesterdays small step forward was just that , a small improvment, this morning the dog has had a wee on the back & then he went to do the usuall jumping up the tops in the kitchen etc , i used the '' leave it'' comand & then he preceeded to do a ritualistic back & forth pacing basically , stress i assume ? I need to know if i should get somone in to look at him & teach me how to deal with this behaviour , i didnt reward the pacing but i had to corner him to get him to stop doing it as it was so distressing to watch So i am at a loss as to know how to deal with the behaviour & am desperate to try to get in his head & modify it , even if its just to get him to a managable level , i am not giving up on him & i intend to work with him & try to understand whats going on & sort it a little

Kay 3,709
I had thought about the name change but last night it made no difference, last night , i have come to he conclusion he has to have a small amount of food often , that coupled with using his old name from late morning today he has been a different dog , he is now asleep in the crate with the door open , i couldnt have done that 24 hrs ago . he is responding to my husband better than me so he is quite keen to have as much hands on with him as possible
Tiff 36
Kay in my opinion you've given him a completely new life, you could call him Micky Mouse or You Shit or Wanker or whatever, he is NOT ignoring you because you are not using his "given" name. He is living a life unlike anything he has encountered in the past, everything is new to him, he is having to learn how to be a DOG and not a track dog living in kennels. How is he doing on walks away from the house?
