patterdale moocher 10 Posted November 27, 2008 Report Share Posted November 27, 2008 out with dog a few weeks ago and she injured her foot she snapped a nail off. I kept her off for 2 weeks until she was using it again and done a weeks road work with her. But i let her off for a run and she is still holding it up on closer inspection i noticed some swelling above the right toe where the small scar is ive got her on RIMADYL could it be cracked or chipped-any help please Quote Link to post

garthy08 0 Posted November 28, 2008 Report Share Posted November 28, 2008 one of my dogs has a toe just like that he has been layed off now four weeks and he has a broken toe just let is rest for a bit longer do not let is run because the ypou let it run a crack or chip will end up brakin it and you will end up with a big bill like i did when i well my pure geryhound just keeep running and the bone come out of the skin and cost me 230 to get sorted Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174 Posted November 28, 2008 Report Share Posted November 28, 2008 From the look of the photo, and this is by no means a conclusive diagnosis as that would be impossible from a photo, you have a serious amount of swelling going on in the area of that scar, on the outside of the foot. There could very well be a bone infection in the joint beneath, as in, inside, where the scar is. At the very least some bad bone bruising, which could take weeks to heal. I would restrict the dog to lead work for at least 3 weeks, hot and cold poultice the area every day, and if things have not improved dramatically by then take the dog to the vet: an infection that is not open to the air, (in the bone for example) will need special antibiotics for anaerobic bacteria (bacteria which don't need air to live). Personally I'd play it safe if you have the money: get the foot x-rayed for any bone fragments floating about, course of antibiotices etc etc. A dog's not use without a foot! Hope this helps.
