Text talk came about because generally you could only fit 160 characters in a text message, go over that and you pay for two messages. So it's easy enough to define what it is when you see words that've been shortened to fit into those 160 characters.

This is the internet though, and you don't get charged per character (some really should be). Text talk is plain out and out lazy and difficult to read properly. Yes, properly. It takes longer to read than ordinary words. Yes, I am old, I am cranky and no, I don't like it
