What camera do I want?

Recommended Posts

I'm upgrading from a hybrid fujifilm(if it doesn't dry out) to a DSLR but which to go for?

I want to mainly take pictures of wildlife so mainly moving and my lurcher, with the odd landscape and other but mainly wildlife standing, flying and lurchers running

What camera should I get?

Please leave out most of the gobbledy gook....and give make and models

Thank you all for helping

Canon eos 1DS mk3 body with 16-35mm 2.8L & 100-400mmL lenses. A 600mm f4 L IS lens would be nice too...

Well, you did ask... ;)

Some idea of your budget would be good... At the other end of the market there is a vast range of camera bodies and lenses available now, most come with reasonable lenses attached, but for wildlife etc it's nice to have a lens in the 70-300mm range.

I'd suggest you visit a camera shop and have a look and try out some cameras as they are all similarly specced it can come down to personal preferences like which one is most comfortable for you to hold.

I was looking at D70, D80, D200, Canon 450d, 350d etc prob second hand

What fps rate is enough for running dogs and flying birds?

My camera does 8fps, but I rarely if ever use it, 4-5 is what I mainly fire at..

Cant speak for Canons as I have never owned one..but out of the Nikons youve mentioned I would be going for the D200, and you can get them quite reasnoble second hand and refurbished since the D300 came out. Technology wise there was a massive jump from the D80 to the D200, but not so much from the D200 to the D300, so at between £300 and £400 second hand, you have a camera that isnt too far behind the D300, and that has enough mega pixles to do excellent A3 prints

What esles do you need to look at?..a good quality piece of glass, the faster the better..

The D200 is a good camera, and you might be lucky enough to get a reasonable one S/H. It does have an awful lot of knobs and buttons to play with as well, which may or may not be a good thing. The D70 was a fine camera in it's day, and I think slightly more robust than the cheaper Canons ie 350D & 400D. These are still very reasonable cameras and capable of delivering the goods.

Personally speaking I'd be looking at a S/H Canon 20D or possibly even 40D now that there is yet another new model out. Most of the pics of mad dogs on my website were taken with a 20D & Canon 70-300 lens.

But my hubby is a nikon man, and can't really fault them either. Both have good autofocus capabilities.

Most of the Dslrs will have a fps rate well capable of getting decent action shots. After all, you only need one shot if it's well-timed :)

Who can remember when we had 36 frames on a roll of film, no motordrives, and max shutter speed of 1/1000 sec, if we were lucky? ;)

what is it that determines focus speed the lense or the body?

Both really... if you have lenses with an autofocus motor built in (most of them do now) that will have a bearing on the speed of focus, but it will also depend on the camera, and the way it adjusts the focus. Most of the newer cameras have different focusing settings for moving or stationary objects, with continuous auto-focus and predictive tracking systems built in.

One tip for really rapid focus is to make sure your camera battery is fully charged, a battery at low power can have quite a dramatic effect on the focus system of both camera and lens.
