Newcomer, help needed

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, just like to introduce myself i am new to the forum only joined today. I would like some help though, i am 46 years old and used to go shooting with an air rifle 20 odd years ago. I am thinking of taking it up again and i am looking to buy an air rifle. I am hoping to be going after Wood pigeon and maybe a Rabbit or two. Air rifles have changed a lot since I last had one and I would be grateful for any feedback on the type of air rifle that would be most suitable for the job. I have a budget of around £400 and I live in the North West of England.

Thanks Everyone :clapper:

Hello and welcome . There are many types of air rifle , spring , pcp , co2 , but the best advise i can give is to look up your nearest fieldsports shop and go and try them all ( most shops will have a range where you can have a shoot ) . You will be able to find a gun that fits you , and that you feel comfortable with . If you go for a pcp ( Pre-Charged Pneumatic Rifles ) remember that you will need means of charging it , eg dive bottle or pump , as with co2 , you need the caplets , but a springer , just your arm

id say have a look at an air arms s200 or air arms s400, ive got a theoban rapid and an s200 and paid about 700 pound for the rapid and 350 for the air arms, the theoban has a 17 shot mag the air arms is a single shot so apart from that they shoot the same, and you can get a mag conversion kit for the air arms s200 for under 100 quid, so you can have multishot which is less agro in between shots, ie if you miss with the first pellet you have another shot immediately but with single shot you have to mess around a bit. if you buy an aas200 youll have some change from 400 to put towards a pump. I would advise .177

for a spinger i'd still say a HW80... but most things nowadays are loads better, the barrels have improved a lot to.

S200

rapid in .177

bsa super ten in .22(the only .22 i got on with)

falcon

the calibers your choise basicaly... but you pay more for .22 lead...

if your seriously into it long turm then just get a rapid.. cuts out the trying this and that. for chargeing gear, one thing to remember...you have to crry the thing, so a dumpy 22 liters sort of too heavey, a 3 liters no problem, but a 7-11 is more convenient.

welcome back... one prob you'll have is remembering what used to be, and the shit you start out with... give it time, it comes back eventualy.

edited in........ a regulated pcp gets a few more shots per fill.. an average shot count is 90, but 70 of those is what they call 'best part the power curve'.. smaller the gun the less shots, so a rapid has about 300 shots.. less hassle more shooting time. for springers the tune kits are very good,a spring and spring guide, some with a better washer.. quietens them a bit too... and a desent silencer really helps.
