rik6479 0
my mk3 ferret finder seems to show roughly twice the depth it actually is. i search for the ferret then put it on locate, when i find it and the l.e.d says 3ft if i dig down i find the ferret at about 1.5-2ft. i`ve sent it back to deben and they say there is no problem. anyone else had the same problem? comanche 3,207
I think most of the one's I've come across tend to over-estimate depth by up to double the actual depth .Once you know that it is fine but Deben's claim that the LED display is ,"only a guide ,may vary with conditions etc", is taking the mick when you are looking at a bit of kit costing £130 or more. The volume knob is probably the most important feature I find . Only check the light display once I have a final location via the volume sensitivity knob. Ah ,that's progress. Quote Link to post

I have a MK3 with the Pinpointer volume knob by I can't quite work out how to use it . it was explained to me to keep turning it right down so their is no audible signal, it will then only become audible when you virtually right on top of it!! is this right or is their alot more to it than this? cheers Jasper Quote Link to post

pointer28 1
My Mk 2 is exactly the same, every time I locate my ferret it says 4.5 feet deep, whether or not it's actually 6 inches or 3 feet deep. Very disappointing for an expensive piece of kit. How come the B&F terrier boxes can manage to get it right? Is there something very difficult about making them? OR Are Deben just firing out any old crap because they have no competition and don't need to bother doing it better? Anybody with any electronic knowledge to answer this? Quote Link to post

No electronics expert mate, but notice my Mk3 works correctly in air, ie stand up on a table or similar and hold it up, and it'll be correct on the dot. Use it underground it can overestimate by varying degrees. Probably caused by the varying density of the soil, and possibly even the water content of the soil. I usually take a bearing by turning the sound down till just audible, I've also got insulating tape over the sound holes, " That f*ckin racket does my head in" and move it from side to side till I'm right on top. I then look at the depth, if it says 2 or three feet, I'll dig carefully. I suppose deben could add more controls, so we could input more info, but then one type of sand could be more radio opaque than another. I know B&F are loads dearer so possibly there loads more complicated. The first locator I had, only gave location but was cheap. Are Deben offering something that doesn't match up to their claims here, Oi Deben, we all want £50 back. Quote Link to post
