Guest mush
MPs back end to most tail docking MPs have voted to *** the docking of dogs' tails - but the restriction will not apply to working dogs, like those used by the police or Army. A *** in England and Wales was carried by 476 votes to 63 in a report stage debate on the Animals Welfare Bill. Removal of dogs' tails would still be allowed if recommended by a vet for medical reasons. Vets and the RSPCA had called for an outright *** on the practice, which is mainly done for cosmetic reasons. The *** on docking excludes working dogs used by police forces, rescue services, the military, pest control firms and in sport shooting. Hygiene claims An attempt to impose an outright *** on the removal of dogs' tail was rejected by 11 votes. But the vote means at least % of the 78,000 dockings applied to puppies each year could become illegal. Supporters of docking argued the practice was necessary for certain breeds, such as boxers, to protect them against tail damage and for hygiene reasons. And the government was in favour of retaining the current situation, which allows docking conducted by a qualified vet. But the British Veterinary Association has said 90% of vets are against what it describes as a painful procedure which should only be carried out for medical reasons. David Bowles, RSPCA head of external affairs, welcomed Tuesday's vote but said a total *** would have been preferable. "MPs have rightly signalled that it is unacceptable in a civilised society to amputate a puppy's tail purely because some people think that it is aesthetically pleasing to disable a dog in this way," he said.
