Guest ferret
we should be calling it a day now because the young rabbits are roughly four weeks old in the area, but i had a phone call of the farmer regarding a certain area to go and clear the rabbits,it was to dangerous for us to take the dogs because of the busy motorway above us,has we arrived at the farm the farmer had different ideas i had to call on a large country house just down the road to clear some rabbits for them,i have done the adjoining land to this farm earlier in the year but there werent that many about ,and i also assumed that it wouldnt be worth knocking this house,on the drive to the house both banks were literally like a honeycombe of holes, the owner of the house said that there were rabbits everywhere there and was desperate to get rid of them,GREAT THIS TIME OF YEAR ESPECIALLY WHEN THE BANKS INQUESTION WERE FROM THE ROAD TO THE TOP AROUND TEN FEET HIGH AND ONE HUNDRED YARDS LONG FULL OF HOLES,where the hell do we start,i spoke to the owner for a while and his wife said that the adjoing field was also having problems around the hedgerows,so i got onto the conversation of controlling the rabbits there today, and thinking about the steep bank another day, possibly september in my head, but i said to him, in a couple of weeks, this day in question i took a lad with me who has done a lot of rabbit control and was looking for a change of scenery, because we didnt have a marking dog,it meant that every bury had to be netted, first bury proved a five holey within minutes a single rabbit bolted my side and dispatched asap, next bury along a largerwarren of about twenty holes ,some very awkward to get at because of a rabbit fence and also blackthorn and hawthorn planted hedgerows,it proved to be a great day out lots of bolts and the lads face when he heard lots of bumping coming towards him underground in the field he gave me the thumbs up and a big smile only to see two rabbits bolting out of a hole a couple of feet behind him he wasnt smiling then ,next bury he had two bolting out of the same hole one he caught the other one got away, thats just ferreting for you .just when i thought of hanging up my nets another rabbit run farm to do in the summer ,the problem i find is that if i dont do the control someone else will step in behind me,and i will lose the farm, plenty of digging lucky enough we only had one dig on opur last outing which was about three feet and yes to a block end with youngsters, all the best lads and good hunting ///gary Quote Link to post

COMPO 54
well done on the new permission, explain to the farmer/landowner that you will be stopping ferreting now cos the ferrets are in season and the foliage will be growing up,(dont mention the rabbits breeding-as few farmers have any sympathy for conies) explain you will ferret in september, and try and keep them happy with a bit of shooting/longnetting/snaring/trapping/dogging over the summer, thus keeping your permission, learning the land and seeing where the populations of rabbits are till the frits and nets come back out Quote Link to post
