Hi folks,

On several occasions whilst viewing pictures of members ferrets,I've noticed a lot of hutches containing either sawdust or woodshavings,

I've kept ferrets for about 18 years, thier multi-layered hutches never contained sawdust or woodshavings,(apart from a toilet tray suspeneded underneath)not suffering any foot problems thier hutch was cleaned twice a week with a hose or high pressure washer summer and winter,

Iwas informed that some rodents died after chewing either sawdust or shavings, due to the toxic nature of the adhesive used in the process of ply prodution,so with this in mind my mustelids were kept on dry boards with shredded paper as bedding,

What is the idea behind using sawdust/shavings in hutches? thanks, scutt

i use sawdust and wood shavings because i find it absorbs ther waste more than paper and any other bedding and its easier to clean there hutches out thats why i use it i dont know ifs thats any help to you [bANNED TEXT] :)

I use wood shavings because it absorbs the waste better and smells good too. With shredded paper there is a chance of poisoning from the ink

i use paper in their beds, and shavings in the hutch because it absorbes the waste. it cant do them that much harm, as when i feed them raw meat it gets dragged through the shavings and in to there bed, so they must be eating the shavings as well  which im not happy about but it dosent seem to do them any harm and i cant stop them doing it anyway.
