A Random Act of Kindness

Recommended Posts

I thought I would share this experience with folk to see what their views were. Anyways my story starts with me checking on my nephews two lurchers which are penned at my kennels while he goe's about getting his ready. He has the use of my kennels and Penn for his two dogs as I live with my partner in another town and I'm in the process of getting my house ready to put on the market hence the space. Now my nephew is what I suppose you'd call a bit of a "chav" but had notions of owning a lurcher and hunting. Despite his shortcomings he is generally a good enough sort and has an outgoing personality. The whole point of giving him a dog in the first place was to help him keep away from the whole drug culture and binge drinking that was leading him down a road that was all to familiar with young people these days, but I digress. Over the last few months I have been on his back constantly about getting his penn ready but have met with excuse after excuse. This has been further complicated by the fact that he now has a girlfriend who lives in Glasgow and he spends his week-ends there instead of caring for his dogs. Oh did I mention he has also an 11 month old pup as well?. Anyways living conditions steadily got worse for the dogs with him not cleaning the penn or feeding the dogs regularly. Well had this out with him and made it clear to him this was unacceptable and how angry I was with him. This seemed to have the desired effect and for awhile had a positive effect and he even started on his penn. However things came to a head this afternoon when I was down to collect my mail. I found the penn covered in shit like a few days worth, no water (it was a very hot day) and the dogs looking very thin and underfed. I was spitting blood at this and went looking for him with the intention of inflicting some physical damage on him but couldn't find him at home or on the phone. So I txt him and eventually he phones back and to my surprise he tells me is away camping to f*****g Loch Lomond and wont be back till Tuesday. He also gives me some lame excuse about one of his mates looking after the dog but the evidence was there for anyone to see this was not happening.

It was at this point my patience finally gave way and I decided then and there enough was enough (truth be told I should have done this months ago)so there I was trying to work out how I was going to sort out two lurchers and try to resolve this with a positive outcome for both dogs. First port of call was the local dog trust were apparently they dont put down any healthy dog. No luck there as there was an 8 to 10 week waiting list to rehome a dog. I tried not to contemplate the spca cause I knew what the probable outcome would be I even thought of putting one of the dreaded free to good home adds in here but time wasn't on my side. So there I was sitting with my Mrs considering if we could squeeze them into an already cramped space here when she hit upon an idea. She suggested that I go speak to a group of travelling folk who had set up camp a few miles from me. I know what some of you are thinking and if I'm being honest I probably thought the same, but try to understand that these dogs were really in dire straits and I thought this would be the lesser of the two evils.

So I set of to speak to the travellers and arrived at the campsite. I spoke to one of the Lad's and he appeared quite interested and asked if he could come and see the dogs on the way back to the car I was bitten (superficially) by one of his feckin JRT's a small price to pay I thought.. He followed me back to my home and had a look at them. The guy asked all the relevant questions and I explained the reasons for me wanting to find a new home for the dog's and finally he agreed that he would take them. He informed me he would have to go back and sort out living quarters for the dogs and would phone me at 6.00pm to arrange to pick up the dogs. This is where the story takes a wee twist. Six o'clock comes and goe's and still no phone call by 9.00pm I had reluctantly decided to hand them into the local police station and was feeling like shit. Suddenly the mobile rings and I've got the guy on the phone telling me that his Mrs wouldn't allow him to have the dogs but that he had sorted out something for me. He goe's on to tell me that he has spoken to a local boarding kennel owner and they were prepared to take the dogs. So I go check out the owners and find them to be on the level and genuine and as you can imagine I was delighted. So I drop of the dogs and have a conversation with the owners who assure me they will hold onto the dogs until they can find them a new home and that I can visit anytime to check on them. So as a way of saying thanks I give them a nice bottle of wine and the promise that I will drop of a few bags of dog food to help with their keep. I then nipped back to the travellers site and hand over a box of beer to the lad who went out of his way to sort something out for me. This guy didn't know me from Adam yet still sorted something out for me and the dogs and brings me to the moral of this story. I'm sure a few of you on this site have notions and views on travelling folk and I probably held similar views but this one random act of kindness has made me think again and just goe's to show that there are decent kind people everywhere you choose to look if you look hard enough and you should never judge a book by its cover. :clapper:
