Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Invited myself to fish our local lake with my lad of 10 .My mate has a ticket on this water and is allowed a guest . Started with the usual 8-10 balls of ground bait ,a mix of brown crumb and sweetcorn laced with frozen ,dead maggots .The reason for the dead maggots is twofold .One is that live maggots tend to cause ground bait balls to break up in the air and the other is that there is a way of thinking that most are lost in the silt of the lake before they are eaten .Anyway as it proved later ,the fish still eat them as a number were coughed up in the nets .Worm and maggot cocktail at 30 yards and wait .Set the lad up with a float rod and maggot and he was soon banging out the roach which are very prolific here .The bites here arent shy at the start of the season as expected ,and some real rod wrenches were in order .Started getting a few in the net when George ,my boy wanted to change seats to try for a bream !.His reactions are quicker than mine and he hit the first twitch much to my surprise .With onlookers from either stage ,i was a very proud dad .The top pic is his first bream .He sat in my spot for a few more fish and a lost tench before i moved him out .Plenty of years ahead of him for that yet !!! The bag was growing nicely until a pike moved in over the baited area and spooked the shoal.I had a rod set up for this event and cast a dead roach out expecting an instant take which is what usually happens here in these situations .The take never happened and i resumed bream fishing .A few bream later i had a slow bite that kept on going and i lifted into what i thought was a tench .It powered out into deep water and went deep but by carefully playing it i managed to get it in the shallows and was surprised to see a nice pike and on worm too ,hooked in the scissors. Ended the seesion with 43 bream ,3 tench and a pike .Cracking sport . Quote Link to post
