Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Got the first of many invites [hopefully ]to a local private lake that holds some decent sized bream and tench as well as good pike fishing .Started the day at 0530 and balled out 10 good sized balls of brown crumb ,maggots and sweetcorn mix .Made these balls the day before so that they would breakdown gradually. My host gave me the chioce of swim which is a bit of a lottery here as the bream are ,as you probably know great rovers .Anyway ,filled the cage feeder ,cast out a worm and maggot cocktail and waited for things to happen .A large pike errupted in the shallows which promted me to tackle up a rod .No live baiting here so caught a skimmer on the float rod and knocked him on the head .Gently lowered the bait in the margins beneath a bung and put the rod on the stage ,bail arm off . The first bream bites started about now and i hooked the second sharp pull .The bream here average about 4-6 pounds and the tench 5-7 so if your on them ,you are in the 100+ club!No sign of any blow on the calm water but i dont expect any at this early stage in the game, that came later .My mate was into a few fish too ,mainly tench on halibut pellets but i stuck with the worm .We both got a rythem going and the baited areas were soon bubbling ,just like someone had poured fairy liquid in the water and thats how we like it .The trick in these situations ,on this lake anyway ,is to cast to the side of the baited area and not in it as you spook the fish when you hook one .On the edges of the baited area, once hooked ,you play the fish away and i try to get a bream up on the top as soon as possible where it comes in easy on its side .The slime off these fish is unbelievable ,like i'd rolled on the floor at an orgy but with waterproofs on it soon washes off .Apart from a lull in sport as a pike boiled over the area ,we caught non stop until 1600 ,4 pm .The odd tench was caught which was a welcome ,strong fight and i had 4 ,best went 6lb 12 oz .43 bream in all best went 5lb 2oz.I finshed on 157lb of fish and my mate had 192lb ,which he wont let me forget for a while i dont expect . The pike bung never moved all day which is a first for me here but mind you i never had time to work it propper as the ream wre on form .Quality day out . I would have liked to of got a propper spread pic but the fishes welfare came first . Quote Link to post

Neil Cooney. 1
Nice one Foxdropper, I'm jealous. I've been out a few times after bream lately with nothing special. 3 or 4 lbs biggest but not to many of them. Although I did loose a bream on a river last week that I reckon was in the 8 or 9 lb bracket but thats it. The good old worm, eh. Quote Link to post

Neil Cooney. 1
LOL believe it or not Irish Lurcher the river is right beside you. I'm after a big bream of it after a friend caught an 11 pounder on it and gave it to his grandfather to eat. Sadly I can't use worms because of the restrictions on Salmon fishing. Quote Link to post
