he passed out using a 308 but hes been told he doesn't need anything that big.

we will be taking deer from an average distance nothing over 500 metes how about a 243 and what is a good make of rifle to look out for.

500 metres is a very very long way to shoot at a Deer.

I would say that the most the majority will shoot at is 200.

When you say stalking license what exactly do you mean?

There is no real need for a .308 for anything up to Red deer and even then a .243 would be adequate if the shot is well placed.

I quote from DSC training Manual from David Stretton-A very popular training manual for DSC candidates.

"The avarage range at which the majority of woodland deer ar shot is between 0-100m" Lowland variation

I assume that you are refering to a DSC when you say License.?

Unless you are refering to the Highland DSC course where longer range shots are considered, due to the terrain and quarry.

I suggest that you confirm with your Dad that he really does mean 500 meters?

As allready said, very long shot......

It doesnt surprise me that they insisted on DSC, they are getting to used to doing that now.

Sounds like a DSC to me anyway and 200 seems much more reasonable.

In that case any reputable .243 will be a very good choice for all round Deer, depends in what you want to spend on a rifle really.

My 2p worth

If I had to chose between a 308 or 243 to shoot all the species of deer it would be the 308. The reason being I consider the 243 is too fast and explosive unless shooting a 100 gr bullet and the problem many 243 users find that it is difficult to get a 100 gr bullet in a 243 to shoot consistently accurately. On the other hand the 308 bullet is a much slower round ( 2700 fps approx) and as a consequence will not inflict anywhere near as much tissue damage as the 243 (3200 fps approx)

Having said that why not consider the 6.5 x 55 as an in between calibre - very accurate, little recoil and great knock down power and minimal tissue damage - well I'm biased as I use a 6.5 on my red, roe and fallow.

I would also champion the 6.5x55SE. A very versatile caliber.

May I suggest you and your father book a few stalks with an experienced stalker to bolster the knowledge you have acquired with the DSC 1. You will then be able to hopefully see a couple of different calibers in action and gain some practical knowledge of stalking .
