Guest JohnGalway
Well about feckin time Due to the weather I had a day off Had a lot planned and absolutely none of it panned out as expected Nevermind says I, I\'m going shooting... Yahoo! I can\'t remember the last time I fired a gun, seriously, it\'s been ages. I got myself a pair of Stoney Point Steady Stix from Cabelas, I picked the camo colour not realising they\'re more suited to safaris Who cares, they\'re great! I love them! Previously I had tried bushwear sticks and I couldn\'t get on with them at all. I believe there are two important differences for me. Firstly the Stoney points have rubberised tops which hold the rifle stock nicely While the Bushwear ones have a webbing type sling which lets the stock slide about, not good! Second difference is that the Stoney point sticks are a lot thinner than the Bushwear ones so are more comfortable to use. Plus the Stoney points will widen more so go lower than the Bushwears. Now, I brought my Sako Quad out. So we\'re talking synthetic stock and lightweight barrel I\'ve not used the Remmy on them yet, laminated stock (possibly slippier - especially when wet) and definately heavier. As a side note I\'m really getting sick of the heavy barrel at the moment, despite it being my second heavy barrel .223 and not even having it a year. I got to use my lovely new Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x50 scope again, through all it\'s magnification levels. Down at 4.5x the eye relief is generous, up at 14x it\'s fussy but totally shootable and very good IMO. I was using Lapua solids since I was just shooting paper. The targets were two A4 pages photocopied from Robert Bucknells book Foxing with Lamp and Rifle They are of the outline of a fox lstanding ooking at me, basically from the head to halfway down the front legs. This wasn\'t an exercise in accuracy. It was about going out, in the wind and rain and going bang, bang, bang, bang, bang repeatedly Off I set back to my farm, head to toe in waterproofs and wellies, I picked a nice spot beside a tree where I could set up my waterproof seat (got to have the little comforts you know). It was bucketing down and I had a light to moderate crosswind for a while. I put my target board out at 60 yards, my .22lr zero for Eley subs, but the Lapuas weren\'t far off so I didn\'t bother changing the elevation. Shooting from behind and over rushes - need to do some serious spraying I figure I shot 160-170 rounds Happy as a pig in shit I tried sitting shooting leaning up against the wall and also leaning far forward also sitting unsupported If that makes sense. From examining the targets I had nine misses, by misses I mean - rather obviously - shots that went where I didn\'t want them. It wasn\'t all slow shooting though There are ear shots on two pages, ment to be there also there are a few shots look like loose groups or strays, they\'re not, they\'re where I was shooting at bits of gorse and ferns blocking my view :innocent: I was there to have a bit of fun and I\'m still smiling. I\'d tried shooting off the bushwears before and I was positively awful, much better with these sticks now and I intend to get better Oh I also used my new Peltor Sportac hearing protectors, they\'re awesome! Much much much better than the Deben slimline ones I also have, top marks and highly reccomended Before going to the shops I intended to do this, but, it's been rightly pointed out to me elsewhere. I only left the target board up against the stone wall to take the photo. While shooting it was out infront of a nice hillock that soaked up all the round. Do not shoot at stone walls! SportingShooter 0
The enduring satisfaction of just sitting around firing a gun all day is one of the most pleasing I can find to date! No matter how many times it pops into your head that you are wasting ammo shooting at targets all day, your enjoyment always wins over rational thought. Glad you had a good day, John, take your mind off work for a few hours anyway. I enjoyed the read too. Regards SS Quote Link to post

I thought sod that, I'm always shooting at those damn things Novelty targets are the flavour of the month now - I predict a long month there's nohing like a little bit of light hearted shooting to cheer a man up, by the way at first glance it looks as if you've been shooting pokemon........ nice one ye mad fecker.................... Tell ya something it was great craic. After the third five round magazine I completely understand why semi autos have 30 round magazines I'll get a Pokemon target for next time I'm still in great form because of it, and better again I'll need to do an ammo run soon Quote Link to post
