Gun Safe/license Question

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I'm just getting into shooting and I'm looking to get a SGC.

I've got a few questions - I work in the west midlands but I live in rental accommodation (I'm a junior doctor [surgeon] and i'm currently moving about once a year for training rotations). I tend to shoot in the area around my parents house and I'd be looking to fit a gun safe there (Hertfordshire). Is it acceptable that to get a SGC even though I'm not permanently living at my parents house (i'm there every other weekend or so). My parents are not

2nd question: there are plenty of companies selling Gun Cabinets online and they come with securing bolts. How do I fit securing bolts - what sort of equipment is needed?

Also anyone know how long a license will take to get in Hertfordshire?

Many thanks

Peter

Radders,

It is perfectly acceptable for you to keep your guns un your parents house, the main thing to remember in this situation is that you will need to keep access to them out of your parents hands, this would entail taking your cabinet keys with you when you go away.

As long as the guns are secure the police should have no issue.

As for securing the cabinet, you will need a drill and bit which matches the size of the bolt and a spanner, perhaps a hammer to give the bolt a tap. The securing bolts expand when tightened and so spread out inside the wall to hold the cabinet in place.

Im afraid im unsure of the time it takes to get a certificate in Hertfordshire.

My father had part of his left arm removed when he was a child due to Polio (now thankfully virtually gone as a disease worldwide) so he's never really been able to do things like play golf or, I'd imagine, aim a gun. I think he'd be keen to come along and watch me hit some clays though.

Radders, believe it or not, quite a few people play golf with one arm. I think there is even a one armed golfers club or society or something?

As for clay shooting, this can also be done with one arm. If you get yourself a gun, let your dad have a feel and see if he can control it. If he's ok, you can load for him and let him have a blast. I believe regular one arm shooters, have self opening guns. They hold the butt to their body with the upper arm, then work the top lever by bending the arm up. The gun opens itself and ejects the empties. Cartridges are loaded from a top pocket, and off they go again. If your dad has a go and enjoys it, he can then look into getting his own suitable kit.

I'll definitely let him have a go then.

If I can get my cabinet this week and get the Firearms officer round soonish then I might have my license by the CLA game fair time and get myself a gun there.

Thanks for all the advice.
