BlueCoyote 0
ok so its only about 10:00am here..... been doing things around the house when i hear Ben barking his fool head off.... i look out the window and see him running around the border of the fence (i have an invisible fence for the bulldogs) he's damn near foaming at the mouth and very upset about something! i was thinking one of two things... either its a snake or something is "wrong" with my dog. he's not as much of a guard as Kaydee is. she doesnt bark at anything unless its something she cant handle herself (ie visitors, deer, etc) Ben just backs her up. But Kaydee isnt there. i have her in another area of the property where deer have been getting in. So Bens all by himself and is obviously pissy about something! i get my gun with two things on my mind.... either i'm going to have to shoot a snake .. or my dog because he's acting majorly nuts for no apparent reason!! he kept flinching and darting away, looking around and barking, then looking at the ground barking, so i had a hard time figuring out the problem from where i was standing. i walk down there to him and it was a damned BOX TURTLE!!!!! needless to say i'm relieved. Ben is too.... i picked up the turtle and showed it to him. he kept a ten foot distance from it too lol all i can imagine is that turtle wanted to pass and Ben said "No" and the turtle was hissing at him - hence the flinching - lol and it hissed at me before i picked up. I guess most dogs dont like reptiles. they have a funny smell..... but i'm glad Kaydee wasnt there. she would have eaten the poor thing alive! she's done that on two other occasions and attempted to do that on several others. there used to be a box turtle around here that she'd cut her teeth on and left some distinct markings but nothing major.... until the day she actually caught the turtle when i wasnt home to rescue it. And the worst thing about box turtles is they have a route and a burrow.... i can put him back and HOPE he doesnt cross paths again, especially with Kaydee in the future, but i'm reluctant to do so.... i like turtles! they make nice little lawn mowers! anyway thought i'd share lol i got to see what Ben would do without backup. he held his ground, i'll give him that much! i've had him for two, nearly three years, and he's always had Kaydee as a partner. i cant stop laughing though, stupid dog or stupid turtle, i dont know which lol
Guest ocs1867
Do you have any problems with Bears our Cougars living where you live?
BlueCoyote 0
problems? nope! we have bears for sure, but no sign of cougars. bob cats are all over the place though. but so far no one has come upon us. though sometimes at night the dogs will start up barking and running after something. i can only assume its a curious coyote, deer, or a damned turtle :glare:
Guest ocs1867
Would a Coyote or Bob cat be a threat to your dogs?
BlueCoyote 0
a pack of coyotes would be. but their normal pack routine is to lure a dog off to be ambushed. mine cant leave the property and if a lone coyote was dumb enough to come into their territory looking for a fight then the bulls would hold it until i could get there. one of my cousins has a pack of coyotes ranging her neighbourhood that have been picking off pets and raiding garbage cans. they come up to her kennels and tease the German Shepherds but there is an electric fence around the kennels so no harm is being done. i've told her i would LOVE to go coyote hunting with my bullies but it isnt her land to give permission..... bob cats dont bother anyone. at least not around MY place. at best they might steal a chicken that hasnt gone back to roost. but since all of our chickens are cooped up thats not a problem either. we have one little bantam hen that is wild and wont come near us except to eat. in spite of the danger she's still out there clucking around, doing her thing. you wont SEE these animals though. you'll hear them, or see signs of them. bobcat sign is like ... cat paws the size of a pit bull's in the sand on the road... have also seen where they have taken a dump and buried it in the middle of the road lol and have heard coyotes howling just around the bend, but never more than one or two. i live in the middle of a pine tree plantation and hunting club.. thats about 260 acres of nothing but pure wilderness. you'd think we would have more problems with predators but i think there is still plenty to eat in the woods. i was surprised to see deer droppings beside the pig pen this morning though. and last night my husband saw a wild rabbit in the front yard. he thought one of mine had gotten out, but i dont have any baby grey bunnies. mine are either white and black.. the puppy wasnt out there, so i guess the bunny thought it was safe to graze lol

BlueCoyote 0
lol Joe i have seen that several times i have a big stuffed black panther in the office. i like to set it up in the window so it looks like a big scary black dog is looking out the window - when the dogs come up and see this thing in the window they go nuts trying to challenge it. since its a cat... it has a cat like stare - which if a dog made that face it would be considered a challenge, right? too funny! and if i move this thing in their direction, mind your knees if you're standing behind them! they'll dart left and right and circle back around to it lol i shouldnt tease them, but its too funny! and my dad had set up a decoy deer target for bow season practice. brand new out of the box..... all the while our horse was off grazing an acre away... once the deer had its head on the horse sees it and comes racing to it, prances around, bucking, kicking, snorting, stamping his feet lol my dad decided assembling it in that area was a bad idea because the horse would probably stomp it to pieces if he ever got out! it was only made of Styrofoam!
