dogs-n-natives 1,182
I use a .243 now, as it is dual purpose with it being a legal calibre for deer, also the bullets are relatively cheap. But if I was to get a rifle specifically for foxes I would have either a .222 or a .22-250. Both of these calibres wont let you down. YIS Quote Link to post
tjpippa 0
Cheers. My firearms department is really unhappy with allowing 243's...they have already pre warned me about that when I said I was thinking of doing my DSC so its gonna have to be one of the others..a couple of people have said 22-250 is a good choice? tjpippa 0
for the 243 they want you to already hold the DSC and to have deer land Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
for the 243 they want you to already hold the DSC and to have deer land Even though they have just been told to accept informal training by the Home Office and ACPO. The DSC is not required in law, common or statute, and so is not legally required, it the firearms depts thinking they are autonomous and above the law im afraid. .243 is granted to others across the UK, if they hassle you over it, Threaten them with the Human Rights Act, Protocol 12 on Discrimination. Frightens the life out of the Police, the Human Rights Act. SS P.S I have a .222 for foxes but either this, a .223 or .22-250 will do you fine. joe w 1
Hi. I'm looking at getting a rifle for foxes? Any suggestions on calibre? There's a few to choose from!! Any help gratefully received. get yourself a 17rem best walk round fox calibre on the planet.iv a 17rem and im picking up a custom 17fireball on saturday.these small calibre rifles make you work that bit harder for your fox and the results make it worth it.thats just my opinon though. if you want the usual suspects then-222-223-22-250 will get the job done. Mr_Logic 5
Suggest you inform your firearms department about the reality of 243 - it was originally conceived solely as a varmint round, people later worked out that actually it has enough poke for deer too. It's also the best varmint round, since it flies as flat or flatter than 22-250, hits harder and is less wind-affected. I would politely inform them that there are avenues available (BASC and as mentioned HUman Rights act) to ensure that they grant it. In short, 243 all the way, definitely worth an argument with an FEO. if they cite the firearms dept and say No, ask for the manager's name there and have a chat with them. 22-250 is a good round but it is the same price for ammo as 243 and isn't as versatile. If they absolutely won't budge or you don't want the argument, then 223 - it's reasonably flat-shooting (very in 40gr Vmax form), hits with enough power to 400-500 yards and can be bloody cheap. My Wolf ammo is very rubbish and is a personal preference, but at 18p a bang it is over 10 times cheaper than my 243's 85gr deer ammo. Quote Link to post
