Bosun11 537
A bit early to start.......? Well, for me i'm always looking at Lurchers and the various crosses that make up this wonderful type, even when i've got all I require in the yard. So, after losing my young bitch I suppose i'm gonna have to start looking at just what I want from a lurcher these days, i've just gotta start doin my homework!! The funny thing is, this site, I trawl through the various posts on this and that cross, virtues and pitfalls ,of course its gotta be one of the ports of call in my search but it just seems to bog me down. I feel mixed reactions to posts that go up (usually) by youngsters and those new to the game on which type to get usually just to start out on the rabbits and the responces recieved are born from members love or regard for the type they use. 'Just for the rabbits'.....'Gotta be a whippet cross'.......'Bedlington/collie, etc'...... and your all right, great dogs, more than capable BUT usually it is a youngster, his/her mind is not set on one job, time is gonna change things, going through this site will change things, big wide world of hunting out there for them........ Are we giving the right advice by offering 'a' particular type to this person? Right now its my turn...... what do I want.... Well, I want Bella back.......but thats not an option So...... Firstly its gotta be a bitch. So what am I gonna use it for...... Well, just about all I can really....... I see rabbits as a given.... Most if not all lurchers should be capable of taking rabbits comfortably, especially at night, how good at them, to me, is dependent on how much you give them. So i'm predominantly a lamper, 23" to 26" would be my prefered height, a good turn of speed and with 'gears' for this game. Good sound feet and a well balanced body, with a good back, of sturdy type, a dog that can handle the knocks.... A brain, well I do recon most lurchers have 'em, its how its developed and used thats the key!! Guts, strike is essential for all and I would want a dog that hits cover if needed, yes, it done for poor Bella but in 30 years + this was a first 'for me' an I'd take that gamble any day rather than see a dog slam on at anything over bowling green height!! Guts enough for bigger stuff, well it would be very welcome and for 20+ years it was 'essential' in my choice but I have a dog for that and with a new one......?? All sounds ok to me..... But..... As I grow ever older I am getting more and more fond of a daytime mooch, so, I would require a dog that is more than capable of finding its own game. All my lamp dogs have hunted up in various fashions but I would now see this as essential......and with 'whatever' pops up , be capable of having the speed and drive to nail it!! Anything else.... maybe i've forgotten summat but right now it ain't springing to mind, that'll do...!!! Ah, one thing I ain't taken into consideration...... My Mrs!! It'll be her dog, what does she want, well she likes all the stuff that don't really bother me, usually based on looks, 'real' lurcher type lookin, broken coat, big brown eyes, playful etc..... The brindle bitch that Shropshire Bull advertised really cought our eye but its a pup i'm after. To be honest, we'd like a lurcher to lurcher x again, pref line bred but where to find a dog that best fits the bill above????? I know of several good honest dogs out there right now, all i'd like to own but none come from a 'line' and none are gonna be bred from in the near future and if they were, what to and would I get a animal of similar type if 'diluted'????? So the point of this post........ I'll be on the lookout and any help along the way would be appreciated. Oh, and their's no rush, its gotta be right. Quote Link to post
