Working my terrier,

Recommended Posts

Went out for an evening duck flighting last night, and rather than leave my JRT at home i thought what the heck ill bring her with me, she will enjoy just being out if nothing else.

So i arrived at the pond to meet the others who had there springers and labradors, to as you can imagine a bit of extracting the urine went on about brining my JRT along with me, i wasnt to bothered the way i see it shes better being out than sitting at home!

This was the first time i had shot this pond and to say its a cracker is an understatement must have flighted in over 50 birds and stopped shooting after only 20 mins (birds still trying to land on pond) so as not to punish the birds and have another go later. We shot 20 birds but it could have been a lot more had we not been a bit more conservative, personally i shot five, of which 2 landed nearer to my neighbouring gun than me the other 3 fell in some very heavy cover about 30 yards from me. After the shooting had stopped i let the dog of the lead and put her over towards where the birds had come down as all the other dogs were some way away from me and i thought what harm can it do to let her have a run, well she was straight in to the cover and hunting well, nose to the ground and within 5 mins she was barking at one spot so over i went to her first duck found, within a futher 10 mins the other two were found by her, job done, i was more than happy with her as the water whilst shallow to a lab was swimming depth to her and the cover was very thick ans she proved she has a nose, and needles to say the unrine extacting stopped!

Nice bit of shooting Jack, I've seen a few terriers and lurchers that are a million times better with a gun than the usual gundog breeds, If all domestic dogs were wild I don't think we would just see Labs and Springers about finding food, Nice one. :good:
