SHIMMING A SCOPE

Recommended Posts

Has anybody done this & how did you go about it?At the weekend i tried to re-zero my AA410C(.22) to 30yds but the elevation on my Nikon Monarch is at its maximum & is dropping short by 1/4".I measured the range with my metre wheel & there was no wind.I have contacted Uttings where i bought the scope & he has sent me a guide on shimming,he recommends using a film negative but do i put this in the mount ring or on the scope rail for the mount to clamp on?Any advice is appreciated.. :signthankspin: Andy

to raise the point of impact you would put the piece of negative inside the rear scope ring at the bottom.

you'd be better off putting a couple of bits in and winding the elevation back a bit so its more central.

be carefull when you tighten the mount down not to overdo it as it can dig the negative onto the scope making nasty crimps.

andy, this has happend to me before. i just used insulation tape to pack it in between the scope tube and the mount!!

give it a go, hope it works for you

hello mate........i have shimmed scopes before.................using very thin strips of alluminium drinks cans( and easier to get hold of)..... i presume a lot more stable than film negative and of course its non ferous and dosn't rust.......cuts very easily with a stanley knife.

this was on full bore rifles and presume it will work ok on air rifles.

hope this helps mate........let us know how you get on.

regards sean

place it onto the lower ring so the scope sits on it.

on a few scopes i use to place a few layers of kitchen foil folded over as needed, but obviously make the pieces thinner than the scope mounts so it cant be seen when the scope is placed in the rings.

Drinks can will work but could mark your scope depending on how you've cut it. Camera negative won't compress but it won't mark it either. It's very stable and I've used it often enough to trust it.
