snaring on/around footpaths

Hi, a farmer has asked me to get rid of a load of rabbits that are causing major problems on his winter wheat fields. The two fields border a steep drop off into brambles ect (where all the warrens are) where there is a footpath. Are you allowed to snare by footpaths? i went up there once and put 20 down as the light was fading then came back at 6.00am in the morning and got 7 all told?

if you have permission to be on the land....... as long as you do not set on the actual footpath, you are within the law....... but you may attract unwanted attention

Is it possible to snare the wheat fields without causing too much damage?........does the footpath run BETWEEN the fields and the rabbit buries?
