Pup training

Recommended Posts

Just got back from a weekend up at Fjager's place where I took the bitch and her pup.

There are all sorts of animals up there on the farm so while I was waiting for Fjager to turn up, I thought I'd get a bit of stock breaking in with the pup.

First introduction was to the birds.

The only bird the pup has seen was a crow, which he killed without hesitation, so I was interested to see how he'd go with the chucks and turkeys

He gave a little bark in the back of his throat but apart from that he was as good as gold

Next he got the chance to meet one of the bulls and that was no problem either

I was going to introduce him to the sheep too but Fjager had actually eaten them all :D

The next thing we tried was how he was around guns

We had the new .222

This posed no problem to him at all so we tried the shotgun with SG's and solids

No problem to him but the solids nearly broke my f*****g shoulder :D

The air rifles were not bother either obviously.

All in all, I think he really benefitted by having his mother around him who is great with stock and guns. Her being calm meant that he was fairly relaxed too.

We did have him out in the evening to watch his mother course a few hares and bunnies and he got a birds eye view of a few runs and almost collided with one himself.

Despite this being the first time he's been around stock, he's shared a yard with cattle and fowl for 24 hours and there's been no dramas. That gives me great confidence in him and I'll keep reinforcing the good behaviour.

Big thanks to Fjager for an excellent weekend

Yes mate, young Jasper certainly handled that shottie better than you.

I have to say Stab's 2 lurchers would have to have one of the best temperaments I have seen in a dog, they are just no trouble, you hardly even know they are there.

We had a few good courses and Jasper was very interested in what was going on, when Stab's fired the .222 the youngun was looking straight away, will be good around firearms in the future.
