22 or 17 hmr??

If i am granted a firearms certifecate which rifle should i get the 22 long rifle or the 17 hmr, i dont wont a big caliber something for rabbits and foxes i was thinking of geting the 22 but surley they are not right for killing foxes out cleanly and the 17 hmr will do purfect but wihch one to you think i should get ??

Each round has it's pros and cons it all depends on your style of shooting.

 

I have both the .22 and .17hmr on my FAC but only have the .17hmr at present, I've spent the last week in Scotland helping a friend who runs a pest control business shooting rabbits and I took the .17hmr with me. It became quite clear very quickly that the .17hmr gave off to loud a crack to use all the time, sending the rabbits running for the hills after every shot (bar one) so most of the time his .22 was the weapon of choice.

Personally I like going for long shots at rabbits and when september comes i'm going to hammer the foxes so the .17hmr does me fine, however at £12.50 for a box of 50 rounds it's not cheep. I'll go through a couple of boxes a week shooting targets so I'm now looking for a .22 to add the the arsenal.

.22 rimfire is a very flexible weapon.From high velocity rounds, down to shot-shells .Comes into its own though when using sub-sonics for quiet all-round pest control but not if you are going in for mainly foxes . .In woodland or small fields shooting within your capabilities and using field craft a .22 rim is fine for those opertunist foxes that turn up unexpectedly or that you call up.You hav'nt got to blow a fox up to kill it ,you have to put the bullet in the right place .A bit of fieldcraft can make up for a lot of gun.

hi i have a cz varmint.22 great rifle use it on rabbits and small vermin cant fault it.ive just bought a cz varmint .17hmr its still in the dealers shop waiting on my variation coming back .will be using it for long range rabbit and vermin and maybe the odd fox if it came in close enought and i use my tikka .222 for foxies.so my advise is get all three

I HAVE BOTH CALIBRES. THE 17 IS A CRACKING ROUND AND CAN TAKE RABBITS OUT TO 200 YDS IF YOU CAN HIT THEM? ( NOT TOO GOOD IN WIND ), AND THEY WILL ALSO DROP A FOX AT 100 YDS PLUS, IF HIT RIGHT--- AMMO ABOUT £20 A HUNDRED.

.22 LR CAN TAKE RABBITS QUIETLY WITH SUBSONICS AT 50YDS, OR AT 100YDS WITH HIGH VELOSITY, CAN ALSO TAKE A FOX AT MAX 100YDS IF HIT RIGHT------ AMMO ABOUT £10 HUNDRED

BOTH CALIBRES WILL DO A GOOD JOB WITHIN THEIR RANGES, SO THE IDEA IS TO GET AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE!!

THE .22 HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BIGGER VARIATION OF AMMO IE SUB SONIC & HIGH VELOSITY AT REDUCED COST.

IF YOU TEND TO GO AFTER FOXES ON A REGULAR BASIS I WOULD GO FOR A CENTRE FIRE POSS .22 HORNET
