ive heard that in days of yore that they were believed to be witches familiars hence some of their nick names , puss, mawkin, sally all common names for cats in days gone, in wales they are called cath , apparently welsh for cat!

in times past it was believed that only a silver bullet couldkill a hare, some times silver sixpences were used as shot stacked in the barel , where they ar popular metal detectorists fing groups of these couns well damaged.A sprig of rowan between the gun stock and the shoulder would ensure a kill too.if a 'witch hare' was shot it was believed that comparable wounds would show on the woman when in human form. there is much superstition surrounding the hare , fishermen wouldnt utter the word hare and if seen wouldnt set to sea! miners and colliers had similar beliefs, and was seen up till the 1930's as good reason for absence from work! hares seen in a town or village is sure to be followed by a house fire!

cats as well as hares were allways linked due to the witch connection, and often hares aswell as cats have been found as sacrifices in old thatch roofes and in walls of very old buildings.

another belief was that hares change sex year on year. often old boys tell link of hares to matters of fertility , infact the easter bunny used to be a hare!. in the west-country it was believed that if a pregnant woman ate a hare she would miscarry and if she even saw one the child would be born with a 'hare' lip!!! the hare did have some possitive uses in the medicle world though, a hares foot kept in the right pocket would ward off rhumatism and cramp, funnily samuel pypes carried one and apparently it cured his incessant flatulance!!!
