I don't know all the spec for snare wire, but for someone starting off, you seem to be going about it the difficult way. Ok you don't want to buy snares, then buy a Countrymans weekly or other magazine. There are loads of adds for snare wire and eyelets, Arthur Carter, Ian Hodge loads . Get yourself 500gms of wire and some eyelets and see how you get on.

the snarewire that we got was .455 , .457, is also good , .375 , is to thin in my opinion , some dealers make snares 6 strand with this stuff as they get more from the drum, but the wires are weeker , there fore you are better with the diam. wire that moley and i suggest, therefore you are better asking for brass snare wire in former diameter mentioned , you would be better purchasing some snares from geordie, already made to professional specifications with the proper diameter wire at very reasoable cost, because shop bought snares are usually made by people with no practical experience in snaring , and are poorly designed, some are 8 and10 strand and liketow rope , they are to short, half spun, kink and break easier, they usually also have a wind down of up to an inch below the eyelet , some have no eyelets on them which elongate, and have cheap thin green twines that just rots , profit is the main agenda with the majority of commercially produced snares, and in my opinion from a professional point of view after 60 yrs, experience , they are crap. i also personally can,t fathom out some peoples mentality, who the hell needs an 8 or 10 stand rabbit snare , one of my old mentors alex chisolm snared 2500 rabbits in one week and never used anything except 6 strand like all the rest of the pros. that i knew
